Rabies is a virus spread by the bite or scratch of an infected animal, usually a dog. Once symptoms begin it is nearly always fatal — but it is 100% preventable with prompt wound care and vaccination. लक्षण: At first, tingling or pain at the bite; later, fever, fear of water, agitation and paralysis. Do not wait for symptoms — act on the bite. Go the same day after any bite, scratch or lick on broken skin by a dog, cat, monkey or jackal — even a small one. The virus in the saliva of an infected animal enters through a bite, scratch or a lick on broken skin.

Immediately wash the wound with running water and soap for at least 15 minutes, then go to a health facility the same day for anti-rabies vaccination (and immunoglobulin for deep bites).
