Sonam Lhochhar is a New Year's day festival of the Tamang and Hyolmo people of Nepal as well as Sikkim and Darjeeling regions of India. It falls on the second new moon after the winter solstice which is usually the Magh Sukla Pratipada based on the eastern lunar calendar.
Years are associated with 12 different animals - rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, goat/sheep, monkey, rooster, dog, and boar. Historically, the festival is celebrated after harvesting the crops.
नेपालीमा
सोनाम ल्होछार हिमाली क्षेत्रमा बसोबास गर्ने तामाङ, ह्योल्मो तथा अन्य मुख्य जातिहरू को साझा साँस्कृतिक पर्व हो । यो चाड बाह्रौ महिनाको पहिलो दिन अनौपचारिक रूपमा मनाइन्छ । सोनाम लोसार किसानहरूले बालिनाली उठाएपछि मनाइने चाड हो । यसको कुनै पात्रो छैन । औपचारिक रूपमा मनाइने नयाँ वर्ष ग्याल्पो लोसार हो । तामाङहरूले पनि सोनाम लोसार नयाँ वर्षको आरम्भको रूपमा मनाउने पर्व हो । ल्होसार मनाउने समुदायले यस्ता 'ल्हो' अर्थात वर्ष बाह्रवटा भएको विश्वास गर्छन् । बाह्र वर्षको नाम पशुपंछी र जीवजन्तुका नामबाट राखिएको हुन्छ । जस्तै: मुसा, गाई, बाघ, बिरालो, गरुड, सर्प, घोडा, भेडा, बाँदर, चरा, कुकुर, सुँगुर वर्ष । यी बाह्र वर्गलाई यो समुदायले बाह्र राशिको रूपमा पनि लिने गरेको पाइन्छ । बाह्र वर्ष समाप्त भए पछि फेरि उही नाम दोहोर्याएर वर्ष गनिन्छ ।
