Fever is a body temperature above about 38 °C. It is a symptom, not a disease — most often the body's response to a viral or bacterial infection. Common causes in Nepal include viral flu, dengue, typhoid, urinary or chest infections, and, in some areas, malaria. Rest, drink plenty of fluids, and dress lightly. A tepid sponge can help comfort. Watch the person and recheck the temperature. If fever lasts more than 2–3 days, is very high, or comes with the red-flag signs below, and sooner for infants, older people, and pregnant women, see a health worker. Red-flag signs include fever with a stiff neck, severe headache, confusion or a non-fading rash; Difficulty breathing, chest pain or a fit (seizure); A fever in a baby under 3 months, or any child who is drowsy and won't feed/drink; Fever with bleeding, black stools or severe abdominal pain.
