Dengue is a viral infection spread by the day-biting Aedes mosquito. Most people recover, but a small number develop severe dengue, which is dangerous. Symptoms include high fever, severe headache, pain behind the eyes, muscle and joint pain, nausea, and a rash, usually starting 4-10 days after a bite. Rest and drink plenty of fluids are recommended. Use paracetamol for fever only on a health worker's advice; avoid aspirin and ibuprofen, which increase bleeding risk. Watch for warning signs such as severe tummy pain or repeated vomiting, bleeding gums or nose, blood in vomit or stools, restlessness, cold clammy skin, or drowsiness; fast breathing or feeling faint when standing. Get tested if fever lasts more than two days. Warning signs of severe dengue — especially as the fever falls around days 3-7 — need hospital care. Empty, cover or scrub water containers weekly, cover stored water, use repellent and screens, and wear long sleeves during the day to prevent mosquito bites. Dengue has spread from the Tarai into Kathmandu Valley and hill towns; cases rise sharply from August to November. Report local outbreaks to your municipality.
