On 29 December 2024, when the Boeing 737-800 operating the flight was approaching Muan, a bird strike occurred, with both of the engines ingesting birds, causing an apparent loss of thrust in the right engine. The pilots issued a mayday alert, performed a go-around, and on the second landing attempt, the landing gear did not deploy and the airplane belly-landed well beyond the normal touchdown zone. It overran the runway at high speed, collided with the approach lighting system, and crashed into a berm encasing a concrete structure that supported an antenna array for the instrument landing system (ILS). All 175 passengers and 4 of the 6 crew members aboard died in the crash. The surviving two cabin crew were seated in the rear of the plane, which detached from the fuselage, and were rescued with injuries.","summary_more":[],"facts":[{"key":"type","label":"Type","values":[{"text":"aviation accident","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q744913"},{"text":"collision","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q238053"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q131581945#P31"}},{"key":"located_in","label":"Located in","values":[{"text":"Muan County (county of South Korea)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q50241"},{"text":"Jeonnam-Gwangju (integrated special city of South Korea)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q138870299"},{"text":"Honam (region)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q494131"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q131581945#P131"}}],"office":null,"sections":[],"cited":[],"cited_from":null,"videos":[],"last_reviewed":null,"organizations":[],"same_as":["https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeju_Air_Flight_2216","https://ne.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E0%A4%9C%E0%A5%87%E0%A4%9C%E0%A5%81_%E0%A4%8F%E0%A4%AF%E0%A4%B0_%E0%A4%89%E0%A4%A1%E0%A4%BE%E0%A4%A8_%E0%A5%A8%E0%A5%A8%E0%A5%A7%E0%A5%AC_%E0%A4%A6%E0%A5%81%E0%A4%B0%E0%A5%8D%E0%A4%98%E0%A4%9F%E0%A4%A8%E0%A4%BE","https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q131581945"],"faq":[{"q":"Where is Jeju Air Flight 2216 located?","a":"Jeju Air Flight 2216 is located in Muan County, Jeonnam-Gwangju, Honam, Nepal."}],"related":[{"name":"Mount Everest","url":"https://diginpl.com/places/mount-everest"},{"name":"Himalayas","url":"https://diginpl.com/places/himalayas"},{"name":"Kathmandu","url":"https://diginpl.com/places/kathmandu"},{"name":"Kangchenjunga","url":"https://diginpl.com/places/kangchenjunga"},{"name":"Annapurna (mountain range)","url":"https://diginpl.com/places/annapurna-mountain-range"},{"name":"Dhaulagiri","url":"https://diginpl.com/places/dhaulagiri"},{"name":"Makalu","url":"https://diginpl.com/places/makalu"},{"name":"Lhotse","url":"https://diginpl.com/places/lhotse"},{"name":"Cho Oyu","url":"https://diginpl.com/places/cho-oyu"},{"name":"Manaslu","url":"https://diginpl.com/places/manaslu"},{"name":"Pokhara","url":"https://diginpl.com/places/pokhara"},{"name":"Lumbini","url":"https://diginpl.com/places/lumbini"}],"places_in":[],"nearby":[],"image":{"url":"https://thumb.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/e/e0/Jeju_Air_flight_2216%2C_Muan_Int%27l_Airport%2C_29_December_2024_16.png/960px-Jeju_Air_flight_2216%2C_Muan_Int%27l_Airport%2C_29_December_2024_16.png","width":640,"height":309,"license":"CC BY 3.0","credit":"자연속으로 into nature","page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Jeju_Air_flight_2216,_Muan_Int%27l_Airport,_29_December_2024_16.png"},"sources":[{"label":"Wikipedia (English): Jeju Air Flight 2216","url":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeju_Air_Flight_2216","license":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/"},{"label":"Wikipedia (Nepali): जेजु एयर उडान २२१६ दुर्घटना","url":"https://ne.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E0%A4%9C%E0%A5%87%E0%A4%9C%E0%A5%81_%E0%A4%8F%E0%A4%AF%E0%A4%B0_%E0%A4%89%E0%A4%A1%E0%A4%BE%E0%A4%A8_%E0%A5%A8%E0%A5%A8%E0%A5%A7%E0%A5%AC_%E0%A4%A6%E0%A5%81%E0%A4%B0%E0%A5%8D%E0%A4%98%E0%A4%9F%E0%A4%A8%E0%A4%BE","license":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/"},{"label":"Wikidata item Q131581945","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q131581945","license":"https://creativecommons.org/publicdomain/zero/1.0/"},{"label":"Image: Jeju Air flight 2216, Muan Int'l Airport, 29 December 2024 16.png by 자연속으로 into nature (CC BY 3.0)","url":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Jeju_Air_flight_2216,_Muan_Int%27l_Airport,_29_December_2024_16.png","license":null}],"license":{"text":"CC BY-SA 4.0","url":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/","facts":"https://creativecommons.org/publicdomain/zero/1.0/"},"attribution":"Text from the Wikipedia article Jeju Air Flight 2216, licensed under CC BY-SA 4.0.
