Over that season, 12 people died trying to reach the summit. These deaths marked that season the deadliest season on Mount Everest until it became the third deadliest after the 23 fatalities from avalanches caused by the April 2015 Nepal earthquake and the 16 fatalities of the 2014 Mount Everest avalanche. The 1996 disaster received widespread publicity, raised questions about the commercialisation of Everest, and prompted an enduring controversy about who and what was at fault for the disaster.","summary_more":[],"facts":[{"key":"type","label":"Type","values":[{"text":"mountaineering accident","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q820355"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q1517252#P31"}}],"office":null,"sections":[],"cited":[],"cited_from":null,"videos":[],"last_reviewed":null,"organizations":[],"same_as":["https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1996_Mount_Everest_disaster","https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q1517252"],"faq":[],"related":[],"places_in":[],"nearby":[{"name":"Mount Everest","url":"https://diginpl.com/places/mount-everest","km":0.0},{"name":"Mahalangur Himal","url":"https://diginpl.com/places/mahalangur-himal","km":0.0},{"name":"Hillary Step","url":"https://diginpl.com/places/hillary-step","km":0.1},{"name":"South Summit","url":"https://diginpl.com/places/south-summit","km":0.3},{"name":"South Col","url":"https://diginpl.com/places/south-col","km":1.6},{"name":"Lhotse","url":"https://diginpl.com/places/lhotse","km":3.0}],"image":{"url":"https://thumb.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/5/53/Everest-3D-Map-Type-EN.jpg/960px-Everest-3D-Map-Type-EN.jpg","width":640,"height":480,"license":"CC0","credit":"Tom Patterson","page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Everest-3D-Map-Type-EN.jpg"},"sources":[{"label":"Wikipedia (English): 1996 Mount Everest disaster","url":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1996_Mount_Everest_disaster","license":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/"},{"label":"Wikidata item Q1517252","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q1517252","license":"https://creativecommons.org/publicdomain/zero/1.0/"},{"label":"Image: Everest-3D-Map-Type-EN.jpg by Tom Patterson (CC0)","url":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Everest-3D-Map-Type-EN.jpg","license":null}],"license":{"text":"CC BY-SA 4.0","url":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/","facts":"https://creativecommons.org/publicdomain/zero/1.0/"},"attribution":"Text from the Wikipedia article 1996 Mount Everest disaster, licensed under CC BY-SA 4.0.
