His research has focused on experiments that trap and cool atoms to temperatures close to absolute zero, and he led one of the first groups to realize Bose–Einstein condensation in these systems in 1995. For this achievement, as well as early fundamental studies of condensates, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2001, together with Eric Allin Cornell and Carl Wieman.","summary_more":[],"facts":[{"key":"born","label":"Born","values":[{"text":"21 October 1957","date":"1957-10-21"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q76462#P569"}},{"key":"birthplace","label":"Place of birth","values":[{"text":"Heidelberg","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q2966"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q76462#P19"}},{"key":"citizenship","label":"Citizenship","values":[{"text":"Germany","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q183"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q76462#P27"}},{"key":"occupation","label":"Occupation","values":[{"text":"physicist","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q169470"},{"text":"university teacher","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q1622272"},{"text":"physics teacher","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q101445630"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q76462#P106"}},{"key":"education","label":"Education","values":[{"text":"Heidelberg University","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q151510"},{"text":"LMU Munich","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q55044"},{"text":"Technical University of Munich","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q157808"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q76462#P69"}},{"key":"awards","label":"Awards","values":[{"text":"Order of Merit of Baden-Württemberg","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q445673","date":"2002"},{"text":"Great Cross with Star and Sash of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q10905171","date":"2001"},{"text":"Nobel Prize in Physics","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q38104","date":"2001"},{"text":"Benjamin Franklin Medal","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q817496","date":"2000"},{"text":"Fritz London Award","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q246592","date":"1999"},{"text":"Dannie Heineman Prize","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q1164466","date":"1999"},{"text":"Wolfgang Paul Lecture","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q2589038","date":"2009"},{"text":"I.
