In just over a decade he created about 2,100 artworks, including around 860 oil paintings, most of them in the last two years of his life. They include landscapes, still lifes, portraits and self-portraits, and are characterised by bold colours and dramatic, impulsive and expressive brushwork that contributed to the foundations of modern art. His suicide at age 37 followed years of mental illness and poverty.","summary_more":["Born into an upper-middle-class family in Zundert, Van Gogh drew as a child and was serious, quiet and thoughtful. As a young man he worked as an art dealer, often travelling, but became depressed after he was transferred to London. He turned to religion, and spent time as a Protestant missionary in southern Belgium. He drifted in ill health and solitude before taking up painting in 1881, having moved back home with his parents. His younger brother Theo supported him financially, and the two kept up a long correspondence by letter. His early works, mostly still lifes and depictions of peasant labourers, contain few signs of the vivid colour that distinguished his later work. In 1886, he moved to Paris, where he met members of the avant-garde, including Émile Bernard and Paul Gauguin, who were reacting against the Impressionist sensibility. As his work developed he created a new approach to still lifes and local landscapes. His paintings grew brighter in colour as he developed a style that became fully realised during his stay in Arles in the south of France in 1888. During this period he broadened his subject matter to include series of olive trees, wheat fields and sunflowers.","Van Gogh suffered from psychotic episodes and delusions and though he…"],"facts":[{"key":"born","label":"Born","values":[{"text":"30 March 1853","date":"1853-03-30"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5582#P569"}},{"key":"birthplace","label":"Place of birth","values":[{"text":"Zundert","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q9883"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5582#P19"}},{"key":"died","label":"Died","values":[{"text":"29 July 1890","date":"1890-07-29"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5582#P570"}},{"key":"deathplace","label":"Place of death","values":[{"text":"Auvers-sur-Oise","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q212406"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5582#P20"}},{"key":"citizenship","label":"Citizenship","values":[{"text":"Kingdom of the Netherlands","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q29999"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5582#P27"}},{"key":"occupation","label":"Occupation","values":[{"text":"painter","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q1028181"},{"text":"botanical illustrator","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q3148760"},{"text":"draftsperson","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q15296811"},{"text":"printmaker","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q11569986"},{"text":"architectural drafter","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q2079935"},{"text":"etcher","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q10862983"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5582#P106"}},{"key":"education","label":"Education","values":[{"text":"Royal Academy of Fine Arts","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q2746779"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5582#P69"}}],"office":null,"sections":[],"cited":[],"cited_from":null,"videos":[],"last_reviewed":null,"organizations":[],"same_as":["https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vincent_van_Gogh","https://ne.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E0%A4%AD%E0%A4%BF%E0%A4%A8%E0%A5%8D%E0%A4%B8%E0%A5%87%E0%A4%A8%E0%A5%8D%E0%A4%A4_%E0%A4%AB%E0%A4%A8_%E0%A4%97%E0%A5%8B%E0%A4%96","https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5582"],"faq":[{"q":"When was Vincent van Gogh born?","a":"Vincent van Gogh was born on 30 March 1853 in Zundert."},{"q":"Where did Vincent van Gogh study?","a":"Vincent van Gogh was educated at Royal Academy of Fine Arts."}],"related":[{"name":"Leonardo da Vinci","url":"https://diginpl.com/people/leonardo-da-vinci"},{"name":"Michelangelo","url":"https://diginpl.com/people/michelangelo"},{"name":"Frida Kahlo","url":"https://diginpl.com/people/frida-kahlo"},{"name":"William Shakespeare","url":"https://diginpl.com/people/william-shakespeare"},{"name":"Rabindranath Tagore","url":"https://diginpl.com/people/rabindranath-tagore"},{"name":"Leo Tolstoy","url":"https://diginpl.com/people/leo-tolstoy"},{"name":"Maya Angelou","url":"https://diginpl.com/people/maya-angelou"},{"name":"Ludwig van Beethoven","url":"https://diginpl.com/people/ludwig-van-beethoven"},{"name":"Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart","url":"https://diginpl.com/people/wolfgang-amadeus-mozart"},{"name":"Gabriel García Márquez","url":"https://diginpl.com/people/gabriel-garcia-marquez"},{"name":"Hayao Miyazaki","url":"https://diginpl.com/people/hayao-miyazaki"},{"name":"Satyajit Ray","url":"https://diginpl.com/people/satyajit-ray"}],"places_in":[],"nearby":[],"image":{"url":"https://diginpl.com/kb-img/vincent-van-gogh-0bc969397a.jpg","width":500,"height":632,"license":"Public domain","credit":"Vincent van Gogh","page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Vincent_van_Gogh_-_Self-Portrait_-_Google_Art_Project_(454045).jpg"},"sources":[{"label":"Wikipedia (English): Vincent van Gogh","url":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vincent_van_Gogh","license":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/"},{"label":"Wikipedia (Nepali): भिन्सेन्त फन गोख","url":"https://ne.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E0%A4%AD%E0%A4%BF%E0%A4%A8%E0%A5%8D%E0%A4%B8%E0%A5%87%E0%A4%A8%E0%A5%8D%E0%A4%A4_%E0%A4%AB%E0%A4%A8_%E0%A4%97%E0%A5%8B%E0%A4%96","license":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/"},{"label":"Wikidata item Q5582","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5582","license":"https://creativecommons.org/publicdomain/zero/1.0/"},{"label":"Image: Vincent van Gogh - Self-Portrait - Google Art Project (454045).jpg by Vincent van Gogh (Public domain)","url":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Vincent_van_Gogh_-_Self-Portrait_-_Google_Art_Project_(454045).jpg","license":null}],"license":{"text":"CC BY-SA 4.0","url":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/","facts":"https://creativecommons.org/publicdomain/zero/1.0/"},"attribution":"Text from the Wikipedia article Vincent van Gogh, licensed under CC BY-SA 4.0.
