Under his leadership of Purdue, the company developed the drug OxyContin, an opioid which is widely believed to have spearheaded the opioid epidemic in the United States. Sackler and Purdue's role in the epidemic led to many lawsuits and fines, with the company filing bankruptcy in 2019. The company's demise and unethical marketing tactics and strategies were the subject of the 2021 Hulu miniseries Dopesick and the 2023 Netflix miniseries Painkiller, in which Sackler is portrayed by Michael Stuhlbarg and Matthew Broderick, respectively.","summary_more":["Sackler and his family are also involved in Mundipharma, a United Kingdom-based pharmaceutical company which manufactures similar opioids to those originally designed by Purdue, such as Targin."],"facts":[{"key":"born","label":"Born","values":[{"text":"10 March 1945","date":"1945-03-10"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q42306725#P569"}},{"key":"birthplace","label":"Place of birth","values":[{"text":"Roslyn","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q2039075"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q42306725#P19"}},{"key":"citizenship","label":"Citizenship","values":[{"text":"United States","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q30"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q42306725#P27"}},{"key":"occupation","label":"Occupation","values":[{"text":"businessperson","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q43845"},{"text":"physician","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q39631"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q42306725#P106"}}],"office":null,"sections":[],"cited":[],"cited_from":null,"videos":[],"last_reviewed":null,"organizations":[],"same_as":["https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Sackler","https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q42306725"],"faq":[{"q":"When was Richard Sackler born?","a":"Richard Sackler was born on 10 March 1945 in Roslyn."}],"related":[{"name":"Abigail Johnson","url":"https://diginpl.com/people/abigail-johnson"},{"name":"Alex Karp","url":"https://diginpl.com/people/alex-karp"},{"name":"Alice Walton","url":"https://diginpl.com/people/alice-walton"},{"name":"Arte Moreno","url":"https://diginpl.com/people/arte-moreno"},{"name":"Arthur Blank","url":"https://diginpl.com/people/arthur-blank"},{"name":"Baiju Bhatt","url":"https://diginpl.com/people/baiju-bhatt"},{"name":"Barry Diller","url":"https://diginpl.com/people/barry-diller"},{"name":"Ben Chestnut","url":"https://diginpl.com/people/ben-chestnut"},{"name":"Bill Ackman","url":"https://diginpl.com/people/bill-ackman"},{"name":"Bill Gates","url":"https://diginpl.com/people/bill-gates"},{"name":"Bob Parsons","url":"https://diginpl.com/people/bob-parsons"},{"name":"Bobby Murphy","url":"https://diginpl.com/people/bobby-murphy"}],"places_in":[],"nearby":[],"image":{"url":"https://diginpl.com/kb-img/richard-sackler-c5d04b7f79.jpg","width":500,"height":282,"license":"CC BY 3.0","credit":"ProPublica","page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Richard_Sackler_deposition_screenshot.jpg"},"sources":[{"label":"Wikipedia (English): Richard Sackler","url":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Sackler","license":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/"},{"label":"Wikidata item Q42306725","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q42306725","license":"https://creativecommons.org/publicdomain/zero/1.0/"},{"label":"Image: Richard Sackler deposition screenshot.jpg by ProPublica (CC BY 3.0)","url":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Richard_Sackler_deposition_screenshot.jpg","license":null}],"license":{"text":"CC BY-SA 4.0","url":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/","facts":"https://creativecommons.org/publicdomain/zero/1.0/"},"attribution":"Text from the Wikipedia article Richard Sackler, licensed under CC BY-SA 4.0.
