He is chiefly notable for his role in the implementation of the Council of Trent, the Counter-Reformation, and the standardization of the Roman Rite within the Latin Church, known as the Tridentine Mass. Pius V declared Thomas Aquinas a Doctor of the Church.","As a cardinal, Ghislieri gained a reputation for putting orthodoxy before personalities, prosecuting eight French bishops for heresy. He also stood firm against nepotism, rebuking his predecessor Pope Pius IV to his face when he wanted to make a 13-year-old member of his family a cardinal and subsidize a nephew from the papal treasury.","By means of the papal bull of 1570, Regnans in Excelsis, Pius V excommunicated Elizabeth I of England for heresy and persecution of English Catholics during her reign. He also arranged the formation of the Holy League, an alliance of Catholic states to combat the advancement of the Ottoman Empire in Eastern Europe. Although outnumbered, the Holy League famously defeated the Ottomans at the Battle of Lepanto in 1571. Pius V attributed the victory to the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary and instituted the feast of Our Lady of Victory. Biographers report that as the Battle of Lepanto ended, Pius rose and went over to a window, where he stood gazing toward the East. \"...[L]ooking at the sky, he cried out, 'A truce to business; our great task at present is to thank God for the victory which He has just given the Christian army'.\""],"facts":[{"key":"born","label":"Born","values":[{"text":"17 January 1504","date":"1504-01-17"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q131945#P569"}},{"key":"birthplace","label":"Place of birth","values":[{"text":"Bosco Marengo","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q17283"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q131945#P19"}},{"key":"died","label":"Died","values":[{"text":"1 May 1572","date":"1572-05-01"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q131945#P570"}},{"key":"deathplace","label":"Place of death","values":[{"text":"Rome","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q220"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q131945#P20"}},{"key":"citizenship","label":"Citizenship","values":[{"text":"Papal States","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q170174"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q131945#P27"}},{"key":"occupation","label":"Occupation","values":[{"text":"Catholic priest","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q250867","start":"1528"},{"text":"Catholic bishop","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q611644","start":"1556-09-14"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q131945#P106"}},{"key":"education","label":"Education","values":[{"text":"University of Bologna","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q131262"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q131945#P69"}},{"key":"positions","label":"Positions held","values":[{"text":"Pope (17 January 1566 – 1 May 1572)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q19546","start":"1566-01-17","end":"1572-05-01"},{"text":"Roman Catholic Bishop of Mondovì (since 27 March 1560)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q59773494","start":"1560-03-27"},{"text":"Roman Catholic Bishop of Nepi and Sutri (since 4 September 1556)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q135726555","start":"1556-09-04"},{"text":"cardinal priest","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q2033341"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q131945#P39"}}],"office":null,"sections":[],"cited":[],"cited_from":null,"videos":[],"last_reviewed":null,"organizations":[],"same_as":["https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pope_Pius_V","https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q131945"],"faq":[{"q":"When was Pope Pius V born?","a":"Pope Pius V was born on 17 January 1504 in Bosco Marengo."},{"q":"What positions has Pope Pius V held?","a":"Positions held by Pope Pius V include: Pope (1566–1572); Roman Catholic Bishop of Mondovì (since 27 March 1560); Roman Catholic Bishop of Nepi and Sutri (since 4 September 1556); cardinal priest."},{"q":"Where did Pope Pius V study?","a":"Pope Pius V was educated at University of Bologna."}],"related":[{"name":"Pope Telesphorus","url":"https://diginpl.com/people/pope-telesphorus"},{"name":"Pope Gregory XIII","url":"https://diginpl.com/people/pope-gregory-xiii"},{"name":"Pope Clement VII","url":"https://diginpl.com/people/pope-clement-vii"},{"name":"Pope Pius I","url":"https://diginpl.com/people/pope-pius-i"},{"name":"Pope Boniface I","url":"https://diginpl.com/people/pope-boniface-i"},{"name":"Pope Agapetus I","url":"https://diginpl.com/people/pope-agapetus-i"}],"places_in":[],"nearby":[],"image":{"url":"https://diginpl.com/kb-img/pope-pius-v-327c99a056.jpg","width":500,"height":640,"license":"Public domain","credit":"Bartolomeo Passarotti and workshop","page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Bartolomeo_Passarotti_-_Pius_V.jpg"},"sources":[{"label":"Wikipedia (English): Pope Pius V","url":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pope_Pius_V","license":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/"},{"label":"Wikidata item Q131945","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q131945","license":"https://creativecommons.org/publicdomain/zero/1.0/"},{"label":"Image: Bartolomeo Passarotti - Pius V.jpg by Bartolomeo Passarotti and workshop (Public domain)","url":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Bartolomeo_Passarotti_-_Pius_V.jpg","license":null}],"license":{"text":"CC BY-SA 4.0","url":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/","facts":"https://creativecommons.org/publicdomain/zero/1.0/"},"attribution":"Text from the Wikipedia article Pope Pius V, licensed under CC BY-SA 4.0.
