Pope Eugene IV made him a cardinal in 1446 after successful trips to Italy and Germany, and when Eugene died the next year, Parentucelli was elected in his place. He took his name Nicholas in memory of his obligations to Niccolò Albergati. He remains the most recent pope to take the pontifical name \"Nicholas\".","summary_more":["The pontificate of Nicholas saw the fall of Constantinople to the Ottoman Turks and the end of the Hundred Years' War. He responded by calling a crusade against the Ottomans, which never materialized. By the Concordat of Vienna he secured the recognition of papal rights over bishoprics and benefices. He also brought about the submission of the last of the antipopes, Felix V, and the dissolution of the Synod of Basel. A key figure in the Roman Renaissance, Nicholas sought to make Rome the home of literature and art. He strengthened fortifications, restored aqueducts, and rebuilt many churches. He ordered design plans for what would eventually be the Basilica of St. Peter."],"facts":[{"key":"born","label":"Born","values":[{"text":"15 November 1397","date":"1397-11-15"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q134588#P569"}},{"key":"birthplace","label":"Place of birth","values":[{"text":"Sarzana","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q160628"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q134588#P19"}},{"key":"died","label":"Died","values":[{"text":"24 March 1455","date":"1455-03-24"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q134588#P570"}},{"key":"deathplace","label":"Place of death","values":[{"text":"Rome","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q220"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q134588#P20"}},{"key":"citizenship","label":"Citizenship","values":[{"text":"Papal States","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q170174"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q134588#P27"}},{"key":"occupation","label":"Occupation","values":[{"text":"librarian","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q182436"},{"text":"Catholic priest","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q250867","start":"1422"},{"text":"Catholic bishop","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q611644"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q134588#P106"}},{"key":"education","label":"Education","values":[{"text":"University of Bologna","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q131262"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q134588#P69"}},{"key":"positions","label":"Positions held","values":[{"text":"Pope (6 March 1447 – 24 March 1455)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q19546","start":"1447-03-06","end":"1455-03-24"},{"text":"cardinal priest (16 December 1446 – 6 March 1447)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q2033341","start":"1446-12-16","end":"1447-03-06"},{"text":"Roman Caholic Bishop of Bologna (27 November 1444 – 6 March 1447)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q111310009","start":"1444-11-27","end":"1447-03-06"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q134588#P39"}}],"office":null,"sections":[],"cited":[],"cited_from":null,"videos":[],"last_reviewed":null,"organizations":[],"same_as":["https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pope_Nicholas_V","https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q134588"],"faq":[{"q":"When was Pope Nicholas V born?","a":"Pope Nicholas V was born on 15 November 1397 in Sarzana."},{"q":"What positions has Pope Nicholas V held?","a":"Positions held by Pope Nicholas V include: Pope (1447–1455); cardinal priest (1446–1447); Roman Caholic Bishop of Bologna (1444–1447)."},{"q":"Where did Pope Nicholas V study?","a":"Pope Nicholas V was educated at University of Bologna."}],"related":[{"name":"Pope Telesphorus","url":"https://diginpl.com/people/pope-telesphorus"},{"name":"Pope Gregory XIII","url":"https://diginpl.com/people/pope-gregory-xiii"},{"name":"Pope Clement VII","url":"https://diginpl.com/people/pope-clement-vii"},{"name":"Pope Pius I","url":"https://diginpl.com/people/pope-pius-i"},{"name":"Pope Boniface I","url":"https://diginpl.com/people/pope-boniface-i"},{"name":"Pope Agapetus I","url":"https://diginpl.com/people/pope-agapetus-i"},{"name":"Pope Innocent VIII","url":"https://diginpl.com/people/pope-innocent-viii"},{"name":"Pope Gregory VIII","url":"https://diginpl.com/people/pope-gregory-viii"},{"name":"Pope Paul II","url":"https://diginpl.com/people/pope-paul-ii"},{"name":"Pope Benedict XVI","url":"https://diginpl.com/people/pope-benedict-xvi"},{"name":"Pope Clement VI","url":"https://diginpl.com/people/pope-clement-vi"},{"name":"Pope Julius II","url":"https://diginpl.com/people/pope-julius-ii"}],"places_in":[],"nearby":[],"image":{"url":"https://diginpl.com/kb-img/pope-nicholas-v-94f64419c3.jpg","width":500,"height":672,"license":"Public domain","credit":"Peter Paul Rubens","page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Paus_Nicolaas_V_door_Peter_Paul_Rubens.jpg"},"sources":[{"label":"Wikipedia (English): Pope Nicholas V","url":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pope_Nicholas_V","license":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/"},{"label":"Wikidata item Q134588","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q134588","license":"https://creativecommons.org/publicdomain/zero/1.0/"},{"label":"Image: Paus Nicolaas V door Peter Paul Rubens.jpg by Peter Paul Rubens (Public domain)","url":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Paus_Nicolaas_V_door_Peter_Paul_Rubens.jpg","license":null}],"license":{"text":"CC BY-SA 4.0","url":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/","facts":"https://creativecommons.org/publicdomain/zero/1.0/"},"attribution":"Text from the Wikipedia article Pope Nicholas V, licensed under CC BY-SA 4.0.
