Within the Papal States, he lowered taxes, produced a surplus in the papal budget and repudiated nepotism within the Church. Innocent XI was frugal in his governance of the Papal States, his methods evident in matters ranging from his manner of dress to a wide range of standards of personal behaviour consistent with his conception of Christian values. Once he was elected to the papacy, he applied himself to moral and administrative reform of the Roman Curia. He abolished sinecures and pushed for greater simplicity in preaching as well as greater reverence in worship, requesting this of both the clergy and faithful. In consideration of his diplomatic and financial support for efforts to free Hungary from Turkish domination, he is still widely referred to in the country as the \"Saviour of Hungary\".","After a difficult cause for canonization, starting in 1791, which caused considerable controversy over the years and which was stopped on several occasions, he was beatified in 1956 by Pope Pius XII."],"facts":[{"key":"born","label":"Born","values":[{"text":"19 May 1611","date":"1611-05-19"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q101286#P569"}},{"key":"birthplace","label":"Place of birth","values":[{"text":"Como","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q1308"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q101286#P19"}},{"key":"died","label":"Died","values":[{"text":"12 August 1689","date":"1689-08-12"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q101286#P570"}},{"key":"deathplace","label":"Place of death","values":[{"text":"Rome","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q220"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q101286#P20"}},{"key":"citizenship","label":"Citizenship","values":[{"text":"Papal States","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q170174"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q101286#P27"}},{"key":"occupation","label":"Occupation","values":[{"text":"Catholic priest","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q250867"},{"text":"Catholic bishop","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q611644","start":"1651-01-29"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q101286#P106"}},{"key":"education","label":"Education","values":[{"text":"Sapienza University of Rome","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q209344"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q101286#P69"}},{"key":"positions","label":"Positions held","values":[{"text":"Pope (21 September 1676 – 12 August 1689)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q19546","start":"1676-09-21","end":"1689-08-12"},{"text":"Camerlengo of the Sacred College of Cardinals (1660–1661)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q1813197","start":"1660","end":"1661"},{"text":"diocesan bishop (4 April 1650 – 6 March 1656)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q1144278","start":"1650-04-04","end":"1656-03-06"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q101286#P39"}}],"office":null,"sections":[],"cited":[],"cited_from":null,"videos":[],"last_reviewed":null,"organizations":[],"same_as":["https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pope_Innocent_XI","https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q101286"],"faq":[{"q":"When was Pope Innocent XI born?","a":"Pope Innocent XI was born on 19 May 1611 in Como."},{"q":"What positions has Pope Innocent XI held?","a":"Positions held by Pope Innocent XI include: Pope (1676–1689);
