He was the fifth Avignon pope and the only one with the pontifical name of \"Innocent\".","summary_more":["Étienne Aubert, born in the Diocese of Limoges, was a civil law professor and held various positions in the church before being appointed as Cardinal-Bishop of Ostia and Velletri by Pope Clement VI. He became Pope Innocent VI on 30 December 1352. As pope, he revoked an agreement asserting the college of cardinals' superiority over the pope and introduced important reforms in church administration. Through his legate, Cardinal Albornoz, he aimed to restore order in Rome.","Innocent VI played a significant role in the 1360 Treaty of Brétigny between France and England. Though he declined an offer to unite the Greek Orthodox Church with the Roman See in exchange for support, his papacy was marked by financial challenges due to wars in Italy and the aftermath of a plague. To address these challenges, he reduced the chapel staff and sold works of art.","Innocent VI was a patron of letters and is generally considered just and merciful, although criticized by some, such as St. Bridget of Sweden, for his actions against the Fraticelli. He died on 12 September 1362 and was succeeded by Urban V. His tomb is located in the Chartreuse du Val de Bénédiction in Villeneuve-lès-Avignon."],"facts":[{"key":"born","label":"Born","values":[{"text":"1282","date":"1282"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q169288#P569"}},{"key":"birthplace","label":"Place of birth","values":[{"text":"Beyssac","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q873126"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q169288#P19"}},{"key":"died","label":"Died","values":[{"text":"12 September 1362","date":"1362-09-12"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q169288#P570"}},{"key":"deathplace","label":"Place of death","values":[{"text":"Avignon","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6397"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q169288#P20"}},{"key":"citizenship","label":"Citizenship","values":[{"text":"France","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q142"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q169288#P27"}},{"key":"occupation","label":"Occupation","values":[{"text":"university teacher","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q1622272"},{"text":"Catholic priest","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q250867"},{"text":"Catholic bishop","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q611644"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q169288#P106"}},{"key":"positions","label":"Positions held","values":[{"text":"Pope (26 December 1352 – 12 September 1362)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q19546","start":"1352-12-26","end":"1362-09-12"},{"text":"cardinal-bishop of Ostia (since 1352)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q103479666","start":"1352"},{"text":"Roman Catholic Bishop of Clermont (since October 1340)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q39238207","start":"1340-10"},{"text":"Roman Catholic Bishop of Noyon (since 23 January 1338)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q51339578","start":"1338-01-23"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q169288#P39"}}],"office":null,"sections":[],"cited":[],"cited_from":null,"videos":[],"last_reviewed":null,"organizations":[],"same_as":["https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pope_Innocent_VI","https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q169288"],"faq":[{"q":"When was Pope Innocent VI born?","a":"Pope Innocent VI was born on 1282 in Beyssac."},{"q":"What positions has Pope Innocent VI held?","a":"Positions held by Pope Innocent VI include: Pope (1352–1362); cardinal-bishop of Ostia (since 1352); Roman Catholic Bishop of Clermont (since October 1340); Roman Catholic Bishop of Noyon (since 23 January 1338)."}],"related":[{"name":"Pope Telesphorus","url":"https://diginpl.com/people/pope-telesphorus"},{"name":"Pope Gregory XIII","url":"https://diginpl.com/people/pope-gregory-xiii"},{"name":"Pope Clement VII","url":"https://diginpl.com/people/pope-clement-vii"},{"name":"Pope Pius I","url":"https://diginpl.com/people/pope-pius-i"},{"name":"Pope Boniface I","url":"https://diginpl.com/people/pope-boniface-i"},{"name":"Pope Agapetus I","url":"https://diginpl.com/people/pope-agapetus-i"},{"name":"Pope Benedict XVI","url":"https://diginpl.com/people/pope-benedict-xvi"},{"name":"Pope Benedict XI","url":"https://diginpl.com/people/pope-benedict-xi"},{"name":"Pope Alexander IV","url":"https://diginpl.com/people/pope-alexander-iv"},{"name":"Pope Gregory IX","url":"https://diginpl.com/people/pope-gregory-ix"},{"name":"Pope Innocent V","url":"https://diginpl.com/people/pope-innocent-v"},{"name":"Pope Honorius II","url":"https://diginpl.com/people/pope-honorius-ii"}],"places_in":[],"nearby":[],"image":{"url":"https://diginpl.com/kb-img/pope-innocent-vi-79e9904154.jpg","width":500,"height":562,"license":"Public domain","credit":"Andrea di Bonaiuto","page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Innocent_VI_par_Andrea_di_Bonaiuto_1365.jpg"},"sources":[{"label":"Wikipedia (English): Pope Innocent VI","url":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pope_Innocent_VI","license":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/"},{"label":"Wikidata item Q169288","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q169288","license":"https://creativecommons.org/publicdomain/zero/1.0/"},{"label":"Image: Innocent VI par Andrea di Bonaiuto 1365.jpg by Andrea di Bonaiuto (Public domain)","url":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Innocent_VI_par_Andrea_di_Bonaiuto_1365.jpg","license":null}],"license":{"text":"CC BY-SA 4.0","url":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/","facts":"https://creativecommons.org/publicdomain/zero/1.0/"},"attribution":"Text from the Wikipedia article Pope Innocent VI, licensed under CC BY-SA 4.0.
