He was the third Avignon pope and reformed monastic orders and opposed nepotism. Unable to remove his capital to Rome or Bologna, Benedict started the great palace at Avignon. He settled the beatific vision controversy of Pope John XXII with the bull Benedictus Deus, which stated that souls may attain the \"fullness of the beatific vision\" before the Last Judgment. Despite many diplomatic attempts with Emperor Louis IV to resolve their differences, Benedict failed to bring the Holy Roman Empire back under papal dominance. He died 25 April 1342 and was buried in Avignon.","summary_more":[],"facts":[{"key":"born","label":"Born","values":[{"text":"1280","date":"1280"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q170389#P569"}},{"key":"birthplace","label":"Place of birth","values":[{"text":"Saverdun","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q693973"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q170389#P19"}},{"key":"died","label":"Died","values":[{"text":"25 April 1342","date":"1342-04-25"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q170389#P570"}},{"key":"deathplace","label":"Place of death","values":[{"text":"Avignon","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6397"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q170389#P20"}},{"key":"citizenship","label":"Citizenship","values":[{"text":"France","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q142"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q170389#P27"}},{"key":"occupation","label":"Occupation","values":[{"text":"Catholic priest","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q250867"},{"text":"theologian","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q1234713"},{"text":"inquisitor","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q1664338"},{"text":"Catholic bishop","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q611644","start":"1317-03-19"},{"text":"diplomat","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q193391"},{"text":"bishop","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q29182"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q170389#P106"}},{"key":"education","label":"Education","values":[{"text":"University of Paris","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q209842"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q170389#P69"}},{"key":"positions","label":"Positions held","values":[{"text":"Pope (28 December 1334 – 25 April 1342)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q19546","start":"1334-12-28","end":"1342-04-25"},{"text":"bishop of Mirepoix (since 2 March 1326)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q30055868","start":"1326-03-02"},{"text":"diocesan bishop (since 19 March 1317)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q1144278","start":"1317-03-19"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q170389#P39"}}],"office":null,"sections":[],"cited":[],"cited_from":null,"videos":[],"last_reviewed":null,"organizations":[],"same_as":["https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pope_Benedict_XII","https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q170389"],"faq":[{"q":"When was Pope Benedict XII born?","a":"Pope Benedict XII was born on 1280 in Saverdun."},{"q":"What positions has Pope Benedict XII held?","a":"Positions held by Pope Benedict XII include: Pope (1334–1342);
