Khodabanda had succeeded his brother, Ismail II. Khodabanda was the son of Shah Tahmasp I by a mother from the Turcoman Mawsillu clan of the Aq Qoyunlu confederation, Sultanum Begum Mawsillu, and a grandson of Ismail I, founder of the Safavid dynasty. After the death of his father in 1576, Khodabanda was passed over in favour of his younger brother Ismail II. Khodabanda had an eye affliction that rendered him nearly blind, and so in accordance with Persian royal culture he could not contend for the throne. However, following Ismail II's short and bloody reign Khodabanda emerged as the only heir and became Shah in 1578 with the backing of the Qizilbash tribes.","summary_more":[],"facts":[{"key":"born","label":"Born","values":[{"text":"1531","date":"1531"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q353091#P569"}},{"key":"birthplace","label":"Place of birth","values":[{"text":"Ardabil","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q180103"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q353091#P19"}},{"key":"died","label":"Died","values":[{"text":"July 1595","date":"1595-07"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q353091#P570"}},{"key":"deathplace","label":"Place of death","values":[{"text":"Alamut Castle","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q4706020"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q353091#P20"}},{"key":"citizenship","label":"Citizenship","values":[{"text":"Safavid Iran","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q18234383"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q353091#P27"}},{"key":"spouse","label":"Spouse","values":[{"text":"Khayr al-Nisa Begum","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q171289"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q353091#P26"}},{"key":"positions","label":"Positions held","values":[{"text":"list of Safavid monarchs (1578–1587)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q20110796","start":"1578-02-11","end":"1587-10"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q353091#P39"}}],"office":null,"sections":[],"cited":[],"cited_from":null,"videos":[],"last_reviewed":null,"organizations":[],"same_as":["https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mohammad_Khodabanda","https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q353091"],"faq":[{"q":"When was Mohammad Khodabanda born?","a":"Mohammad Khodabanda was born on 1531 in Ardabil."},{"q":"What positions has Mohammad Khodabanda held?","a":"Positions held by Mohammad Khodabanda include: list of Safavid monarchs (1578–1587)."}],"related":[{"name":"Abbas the Great","url":"https://diginpl.com/people/abbas-the-great"},{"name":"Suleiman I of Persia","url":"https://diginpl.com/people/suleiman-i-of-persia"},{"name":"Ismail I","url":"https://diginpl.com/people/ismail-i"},{"name":"Abbas II of Persia","url":"https://diginpl.com/people/abbas-ii-of-persia"},{"name":"Ismail II","url":"https://diginpl.com/people/ismail-ii"},{"name":"Tahmasp I","url":"https://diginpl.com/people/tahmasp-i"}],"places_in":[],"nearby":[],"image":{"url":"https://diginpl.com/kb-img/mohammad-khodabanda-5b1a0a4d09.jpg","width":425,"height":792,"license":"Public domain","credit":"Ahmad Monshi Qomi","page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Illustration_of_the_Safavid_shah_Mohammad_Khodabandeh.jpg"},"sources":[{"label":"Wikipedia (English): Mohammad Khodabanda","url":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mohammad_Khodabanda","license":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/"},{"label":"Wikidata item Q353091","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q353091","license":"https://creativecommons.org/publicdomain/zero/1.0/"},{"label":"Image: Illustration of the Safavid shah Mohammad Khodabandeh.jpg by Ahmad Monshi Qomi (Public domain)","url":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Illustration_of_the_Safavid_shah_Mohammad_Khodabandeh.jpg","license":null}],"license":{"text":"CC BY-SA 4.0","url":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/","facts":"https://creativecommons.org/publicdomain/zero/1.0/"},"attribution":"Text from the Wikipedia article Mohammad Khodabanda, licensed under CC BY-SA 4.0.
