He was an illegitimate son of Alfonso I, supposedly by a Moorish serf. He usurped the throne on the death of Silo, the husband of his half sister Adosinda, earning himself the nickname of the Usurper. The nobility had elected Alfonso II at Adosinda's insistence, but Mauregatus assembled a large army of supporters and forced Alfonso into exile in Álava.","summary_more":["According to folklore, Mauregatus and Moorish rulers agreed to the apocryphal \"Tribute of the 100 Maidens,\" which gifted the Moors 100 Asturian virgins annually as repayment for their assistance in Mauregatus' rise to the throne. This arrangement supposedly ended after Ramiro I's defeat of the Moors at the legendary Battle of Clavijo.","After six years in power, he died of natural causes in 789 and was buried in the Church of San Juan Apóstol y Evangelista in Pravia. Following his death, Bermudo I was chosen as his successor."],"facts":[{"key":"birthplace","label":"Place of birth","values":[{"text":"Kingdom of Asturias","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q231392"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q379777#P19"}},{"key":"died","label":"Died","values":[{"text":"788","date":"0788"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q379777#P570"}},{"key":"deathplace","label":"Place of death","values":[{"text":"Pravia","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q820469"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q379777#P20"}},{"key":"citizenship","label":"Citizenship","values":[{"text":"Kingdom of Asturias","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q231392"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q379777#P27"}},{"key":"occupation","label":"Occupation","values":[{"text":"warrior","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q1250916"},{"text":"ruler","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q1097498"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q379777#P106"}},{"key":"spouse","label":"Spouse","values":[{"text":"Creusa","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q8351610"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q379777#P26"}},{"key":"positions","label":"Positions held","values":[{"text":"Monarch of the Kingdom of Asturias (0783–0788)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q58769733","start":"0783","end":"0788"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q379777#P39"}}],"office":null,"sections":[],"cited":[],"cited_from":null,"videos":[],"last_reviewed":null,"organizations":[],"same_as":["https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mauregatus","https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q379777"],"faq":[{"q":"What positions has Mauregatus held?","a":"Positions held by Mauregatus include: Monarch of the Kingdom of Asturias (0783–0788)."}],"related":[{"name":"Alfonso I of Asturias","url":"https://diginpl.com/people/alfonso-i-of-asturias"},{"name":"Favila of Asturias","url":"https://diginpl.com/people/favila-of-asturias"},{"name":"Fruela I of Asturias","url":"https://diginpl.com/people/fruela-i-of-asturias"},{"name":"Silo of Asturias","url":"https://diginpl.com/people/silo-of-asturias"},{"name":"Alfonso III of Asturias","url":"https://diginpl.com/people/alfonso-iii-of-asturias"},{"name":"Fruela II of Asturias","url":"https://diginpl.com/people/fruela-ii-of-asturias"}],"places_in":[],"nearby":[],"image":{"url":"https://diginpl.com/kb-img/mauregatus-c09539213d.jpg","width":500,"height":796,"license":"Public domain","credit":"Manuel Iglesias y Domínguez","page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:El_rey_Mauregato_de_Asturias_(Museo_del_Prado).jpg"},"sources":[{"label":"Wikipedia (English): Mauregatus","url":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mauregatus","license":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/"},{"label":"Wikidata item Q379777","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q379777","license":"https://creativecommons.org/publicdomain/zero/1.0/"},{"label":"Image: El rey Mauregato de Asturias (Museo del Prado).jpg by Manuel Iglesias y Domínguez (Public domain)","url":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:El_rey_Mauregato_de_Asturias_(Museo_del_Prado).jpg","license":null}],"license":{"text":"CC BY-SA 4.0","url":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/","facts":"https://creativecommons.org/publicdomain/zero/1.0/"},"attribution":"Text from the Wikipedia article Mauregatus, licensed under CC BY-SA 4.0.
