In 1946 Ryle and Derek Vonberg were the first people to publish interferometric astronomical measurements at radio wavelengths. With improved equipment, Ryle observed the most distant known galaxies in the universe at that time. He was the first Professor of Radio Astronomy in the University of Cambridge and founding director of the Mullard Radio Astronomy Observatory. He was the twelfth Astronomer Royal from 1972 to 1982. Ryle and Antony Hewish shared the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1974, the first Nobel prize awarded in recognition of astronomical research. In the 1970s, Ryle turned the greater part of his attention from astronomy to social and political issues which he considered to be more urgent. He was also an enthusiastic amateur radio operator.","summary_more":[],"facts":[{"key":"born","label":"Born","values":[{"text":"27 September 1918","date":"1918-09-27"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q190766#P569"}},{"key":"birthplace","label":"Place of birth","values":[{"text":"Brighton","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q131491"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q190766#P19"}},{"key":"died","label":"Died","values":[{"text":"14 October 1984","date":"1984-10-14"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q190766#P570"}},{"key":"deathplace","label":"Place of death","values":[{"text":"Cambridge","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q350"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q190766#P20"}},{"key":"citizenship","label":"Citizenship","values":[{"text":"United Kingdom","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q145"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q190766#P27"}},{"key":"occupation","label":"Occupation","values":[{"text":"astronomer","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q11063"},{"text":"physicist","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q169470"},{"text":"astrophysicist","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q752129"},{"text":"researcher","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q1650915"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q190766#P106"}},{"key":"education","label":"Education","values":[{"text":"Christ Church","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q745967"},{"text":"Trinity College","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q332342"},{"text":"Bradfield College","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q4954524"},{"text":"University of Oxford","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q34433"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q190766#P69"}},{"key":"positions","label":"Positions held","values":[{"text":"Astronomer Royal (1972–1982)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q369877","start":"1972","end":"1982"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q190766#P39"}},{"key":"awards","label":"Awards","values":[{"text":"Nobel Prize in Physics","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q38104","date":"1974"},{"text":"Fellow of the Royal Society","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q15631401"},{"text":"Royal Medal","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q746756","date":"1973"},{"text":"Albert A.
