He is also known, along with Mario Capecchi and Oliver Smithies, for his work in the development of the knockout mouse and the related technology of gene targeting, a method of using embryonic stem cells to create specific gene modifications in mice. In 2007, the three shared the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in recognition of their discovery and contribution to the efforts to develop new treatments for illnesses in humans.","summary_more":["He won a major scholarship to Christ's College, Cambridge at a time when advances in genetics were occurring there and became interested in biology and biochemistry. He then went to University College London where he learned laboratory skills supervised by Elizabeth Deuchar. In 1978, he moved to the Department of Genetics, at the University of Cambridge, and in 1980 began his collaboration with Matthew Kaufman. They explored the method of using blastocysts for the isolation of embryonic stem cells. After Kaufman left, Evans continued his work, upgrading his laboratory skills to the newest technologies, isolated the embryonic stem cell of the early mouse embryo and established it in a cell culture. He genetically modified and implanted it into adult female mice with the intent of creating genetically modified offspring, work for which he was awarded the Nobel Prize in 2007. In 2015, he was elected a Fellow of the Learned Society of Wales. Today, genetically modified mice are considered vital for medical research."],"facts":[{"key":"born","label":"Born","values":[{"text":"1 January 1941","date":"1941-01-01"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q207719#P569"}},{"key":"birthplace","label":"Place of birth","values":[{"text":"Stroud","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q281749"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q207719#P19"}},{"key":"citizenship","label":"Citizenship","values":[{"text":"United Kingdom","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q145"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q207719#P27"}},{"key":"occupation","label":"Occupation","values":[{"text":"geneticist","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q3126128"},{"text":"university teacher","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q1622272"},{"text":"biologist","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q864503"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q207719#P106"}},{"key":"education","label":"Education","values":[{"text":"Christ's College","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q714717"},{"text":"University College London","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q193196"},{"text":"St Dunstan's College","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7592981"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q207719#P69"}},{"key":"awards","label":"Awards","values":[{"text":"Albert Lasker Award for Basic Medical Research","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q999734","date":"2001"},{"text":"Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q80061","date":"2007"},{"text":"Copley Medal","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q28003","date":"2009"},{"text":"EMBO Membership","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q26268243"},{"text":"March of Dimes Prize in Developmental Biology","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q175384","date":"1999"},{"text":"William Bate Hardy Prize","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q17060634","date":"1993"},{"text":"honorary doctor of University College London","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q42309487"},{"text":"honorary doctor of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q59306809"},{"text":"honorary doctorate from the University of Cambridge","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q41795465"},{"text":"Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q24081923","date":"2008"},{"text":"Baly Medal","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q42609895","date":"2009"},{"text":"honorary doctor of the University of Bath","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q78232499"},{"text":"Fellow of the Royal Society","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q15631401","date":"1993"},{"text":"Knight Bachelor","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q833163"},{"text":"Fellow of the Learned Society of Wales","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q59772620","date":"2013"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q207719#P166"}}],"office":null,"sections":[],"cited":[],"cited_from":null,"videos":[],"last_reviewed":null,"organizations":[],"same_as":["https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Martin_Evans","https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q207719"],"faq":[{"q":"When was Martin Evans born?","a":"Martin Evans was born on 1 January 1941 in Stroud."},{"q":"Where did Martin Evans study?","a":"Martin Evans was educated at Christ's College, University College London, St Dunstan's College."}],"related":[{"name":"Aaron Klug","url":"https://diginpl.com/people/aaron-klug"},{"name":"Alan Hodgkin","url":"https://diginpl.com/people/alan-hodgkin"},{"name":"Andre Geim","url":"https://diginpl.com/people/andre-geim"},{"name":"Andrew Huxley","url":"https://diginpl.com/people/andrew-huxley"},{"name":"Antony Hewish","url":"https://diginpl.com/people/antony-hewish"},{"name":"Archer Martin","url":"https://diginpl.com/people/archer-martin"},{"name":"Arthur Harden","url":"https://diginpl.com/people/arthur-harden"},{"name":"Brian Josephson","url":"https://diginpl.com/people/brian-josephson"},{"name":"C.
