Initially a Moderate Republican, he later became a social democrat and one of the first possibilists and in 1902 the leader of the French Socialist Party, which opposed Jules Guesde's revolutionary Socialist Party of France. The two parties merged in 1905 into the French Section of the Workers' International (SFIO). An antimilitarist, he was assassinated in 1914 at the outbreak of World War I but remains one of the main historical figures of the French Left. As a heterodox Marxist, Jaurès rejected the concept of the dictatorship of the proletariat and tried to conciliate idealism and materialism, individualism and collectivism, democracy and class struggle, and patriotism and internationalism.","summary_more":[],"facts":[{"key":"born","label":"Born","values":[{"text":"3 September 1859","date":"1859-09-03"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q12688#P569"}},{"key":"birthplace","label":"Place of birth","values":[{"text":"Castres","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q188776"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q12688#P19"}},{"key":"died","label":"Died","values":[{"text":"31 July 1914","date":"1914-07-31"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q12688#P570"}},{"key":"deathplace","label":"Place of death","values":[{"text":"Paris","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q90"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q12688#P20"}},{"key":"citizenship","label":"Citizenship","values":[{"text":"France","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q142"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q12688#P27"}},{"key":"occupation","label":"Occupation","values":[{"text":"politician","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q82955"},{"text":"professor","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q121594"},{"text":"journalist","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q1930187"},{"text":"writer","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q36180"},{"text":"historian","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q201788"},{"text":"reporter","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q42909"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q12688#P106"}},{"key":"party","label":"Political party","values":[{"text":"French Section of the Workers' International","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q1332068"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q12688#P102"}},{"key":"education","label":"Education","values":[{"text":"École Normale Supérieure","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q83259"},{"text":"Lycée Louis-le-Grand","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q1059546"},{"text":"Collège Sainte-Barbe","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q1110002"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q12688#P69"}},{"key":"spouse","label":"Spouse","values":[{"text":"Louise Bois","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q108706707"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q12688#P26"}},{"key":"positions","label":"Positions held","values":[{"text":"member of the French National Assembly (1 June 1902 – 31 July 1914)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q3044918","start":"1902-06-01","end":"1914-07-31"},{"text":"president (1902–1905)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q30461","start":"1902","end":"1905"},{"text":"member of the French National Assembly (8 January 1893 – 1 June 1898)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q3044918","start":"1893-01-08","end":"1898-06-01"},{"text":"Deputy of the French Third Republic (4 October 1885 – 14 October 1889)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q115548470","start":"1885-10-04","end":"1889-10-14"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q12688#P39"}},{"key":"awards","label":"Awards","values":[{"text":"Concours général","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q908793"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q12688#P166"}}],"office":null,"sections":[],"cited":[],"cited_from":null,"videos":[],"last_reviewed":null,"organizations":[],"same_as":["https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jean_Jaur%C3%A8s","https://ne.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E0%A4%9C%E0%A4%BE%E0%A4%81_%E0%A4%9C%E0%A5%8B%E0%A4%B0%E0%A5%87%E0%A4%B8","https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q12688"],"faq":[{"q":"When was Jean Jaurès born?","a":"Jean Jaurès was born on 3 September 1859 in Castres."},{"q":"What positions has Jean Jaurès held?","a":"Positions held by Jean Jaurès include: member of the French National Assembly (1902–1914);
