His long and stable rule was marked by economical and political recovery from the Ruin. A loyal subject of Russia during most of his rule, Mazepa's close relationship with Tsar Peter I deteriorated as a result of the latter's administrative reforms, which increasingly deprived Mazepa and the Hetmanate of their autonomy. In 1708, Mazepa abandoned his alliance with Peter I and sided with Charles XII of Sweden after the Tsar refused to protect the Hetmanate against the advancing Swedes, instead ordering that much of Ukraine be burned to prevent the Swedes from gaining access to supplies and winter quarters.","summary_more":[],"facts":[{"key":"born","label":"Born","values":[{"text":"20 March 1639","date":"1639-03-20"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q165419#P569"}},{"key":"birthplace","label":"Place of birth","values":[{"text":"Mazepintsi","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7231748"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q165419#P19"}},{"key":"died","label":"Died","values":[{"text":"21 September 1709","date":"1709-09-21"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q165419#P570"}},{"key":"deathplace","label":"Place of death","values":[{"text":"Bender","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q192176"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q165419#P20"}},{"key":"citizenship","label":"Citizenship","values":[{"text":"Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q172107"},{"text":"Cossack Hetmanate","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q212439"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q165419#P27"}},{"key":"occupation","label":"Occupation","values":[{"text":"diplomat","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q193391"},{"text":"politician","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q82955"},{"text":"military commander","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q11545923"},{"text":"bandurist","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q4854747"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q165419#P106"}},{"key":"education","label":"Education","values":[{"text":"Kyiv-Mohyla Academy","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q3496636"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q165419#P69"}},{"key":"spouse","label":"Spouse","values":[{"text":"Hanna Polovets II","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q21748957","start":"1668","end":"1702"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q165419#P26"}},{"key":"positions","label":"Positions held","values":[{"text":"Hetman of Zaporizhian Host (4 August 1687 – 6 November 1708)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q16157109","start":"1687-08-04","end":"1708-11-06"},{"text":"Prince of the Holy Roman Empire","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q1411354"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q165419#P39"}},{"key":"awards","label":"Awards","values":[{"text":"Order of the White Eagle","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q84020"},{"text":"Order of St. Andrew","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q1126563","date":"1700-02-08"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q165419#P166"}}],"office":null,"sections":[],"cited":[],"cited_from":null,"videos":[],"last_reviewed":null,"organizations":[],"same_as":["https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ivan_Mazepa","https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q165419"],"faq":[{"q":"When was Ivan Mazepa born?","a":"Ivan Mazepa was born on 20 March 1639 in Mazepintsi."},{"q":"What positions has Ivan Mazepa held?","a":"Positions held by Ivan Mazepa include: Hetman of Zaporizhian Host (1687–1708); Prince of the Holy Roman Empire."},{"q":"Where did Ivan Mazepa study?","a":"Ivan Mazepa was educated at Kyiv-Mohyla Academy."}],"related":[{"name":"Bohdan Khmelnytsky","url":"https://diginpl.com/people/bohdan-khmelnytsky"},{"name":"Danylo Apostol","url":"https://diginpl.com/people/danylo-apostol"},{"name":"Taras Fedorovych","url":"https://diginpl.com/people/taras-fedorovych"},{"name":"Petro Doroshenko","url":"https://diginpl.com/people/petro-doroshenko"},{"name":"Ivan Vyhovsky","url":"https://diginpl.com/people/ivan-vyhovsky"},{"name":"George Ducas","url":"https://diginpl.com/people/george-ducas"}],"places_in":[],"nearby":[],"image":{"url":"https://diginpl.com/kb-img/ivan-mazepa-fd4473d01c.jpg","width":400,"height":590,"license":"Public domain","credit":"Unknown author Unknown author","page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Portret_Mazepa.jpg"},"sources":[{"label":"Wikipedia (English): Ivan Mazepa","url":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ivan_Mazepa","license":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/"},{"label":"Wikidata item Q165419","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q165419","license":"https://creativecommons.org/publicdomain/zero/1.0/"},{"label":"Image: Portret Mazepa.jpg by Unknown author Unknown author (Public domain)","url":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Portret_Mazepa.jpg","license":null}],"license":{"text":"CC BY-SA 4.0","url":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/","facts":"https://creativecommons.org/publicdomain/zero/1.0/"},"attribution":"Text from the Wikipedia article Ivan Mazepa, licensed under CC BY-SA 4.0.
