In 1899, Bourassa was outspoken against the British government's request for Canada to send a militia to fight for Britain in the Second Boer War. Prime Minister Sir Wilfrid Laurier's compromise was to send a volunteer force, but the seeds were sown for future conscription protests during the World Wars of the next half-century. Bourassa unsuccessfully challenged the proposal to build warships to help protect the empire. He led the opposition to conscription during World War I and argued that Canada's interests were not at stake. He opposed Catholic bishops who defended military support of Britain and its allies. Bourassa was an ideological father of French-Canadian nationalism. Bourassa was also a defining force in forging French Canada's attitude to the Canadian Confederation of 1867.","summary_more":[],"facts":[{"key":"born","label":"Born","values":[{"text":"1 September 1868","date":"1868-09-01"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q3130733#P569"}},{"key":"birthplace","label":"Place of birth","values":[{"text":"Montreal","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q340"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q3130733#P19"}},{"key":"died","label":"Died","values":[{"text":"31 August 1952","date":"1952-08-31"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q3130733#P570"}},{"key":"deathplace","label":"Place of death","values":[{"text":"Outremont","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q2042095"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q3130733#P20"}},{"key":"citizenship","label":"Citizenship","values":[{"text":"Canada","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q16"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q3130733#P27"}},{"key":"occupation","label":"Occupation","values":[{"text":"journalist","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q1930187"},{"text":"politician","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q82955"},{"text":"peace activist","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q16323111"},{"text":"newspaper proprietor","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q24266767"},{"text":"newspaper editor","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q17351648"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q3130733#P106"}},{"key":"party","label":"Political party","values":[{"text":"Liberal Party of Canada","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q138345"},{"text":"independent politician","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q327591"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q3130733#P102"}},{"key":"positions","label":"Positions held","values":[{"text":"member of the House of Commons of Canada (28 July 1930 – 13 October 1935)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q15964890","start":"1930-07-28","end":"1935-10-13"},{"text":"member of the House of Commons of Canada (14 September 1926 – 27 July 1930)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q15964890","start":"1926-09-14","end":"1930-07-27"},{"text":"member of the House of Commons of Canada (29 October 1925 – 13 September 1926)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q15964890","start":"1925-10-29","end":"1926-09-13"},{"text":"member of the House of Commons of Canada (3 November 1904 – 29 October 1907)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q15964890","start":"1904-11-03","end":"1907-10-29"},{"text":"member of the House of Commons of Canada (7 November 1900 – 2 November 1904)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q15964890","start":"1900-11-07","end":"1904-11-02"},{"text":"member of the House of Commons of Canada (18 January 1900 – 6 November 1900)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q15964890","start":"1900-01-18","end":"1900-11-06"},{"text":"member of the House of Commons of Canada (23 June 1896 – 26 October 1899)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q15964890","start":"1896-06-23","end":"1899-10-26"},{"text":"Member of the National Assembly of Quebec (1896–1907)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q3305338","start":"1896","end":"1907"},{"text":"mayor (1896–1898)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q30185","start":"1896","end":"1898"},{"text":"mayor (1890–1894)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q30185","start":"1890","end":"1894"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q3130733#P39"}},{"key":"awards","label":"Awards","values":[{"text":"Person of National Historic Significance","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q3253120"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q3130733#P166"}}],"office":null,"sections":[],"cited":[],"cited_from":null,"videos":[],"last_reviewed":null,"organizations":[],"same_as":["https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henri_Bourassa","https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q3130733"],"faq":[{"q":"When was Henri Bourassa born?","a":"Henri Bourassa was born on 1 September 1868 in Montreal."},{"q":"What positions has Henri Bourassa held?","a":"Positions held by Henri Bourassa include: member of the House of Commons of Canada (1930–1935);
