He was the Board of Trustees Professor of Chemistry and head of the Stoddart Mechanostereochemistry Group in the Department of Chemistry at Northwestern University in the United States. He worked in the area of supramolecular chemistry and nanotechnology. Stoddart developed highly efficient syntheses of mechanically-interlocked molecular architectures such as molecular Borromean rings, catenanes and rotaxanes utilising molecular recognition and molecular self-assembly processes. He demonstrated that these topologies can be employed as molecular switches. His group has even applied these structures in the fabrication of nanoelectronic devices and nanoelectromechanical systems (NEMS). His efforts were recognized by numerous awards, including the 2007 King Faisal International Prize in Science. He shared the Nobel Prize in Chemistry together with Ben Feringa and Jean-Pierre Sauvage in 2016 for the design and synthesis of molecular machines.","summary_more":[],"facts":[{"key":"born","label":"Born","values":[{"text":"24 May 1942","date":"1942-05-24"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q376243#P569"}},{"key":"birthplace","label":"Place of birth","values":[{"text":"Edinburgh","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q23436"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q376243#P19"}},{"key":"died","label":"Died","values":[{"text":"30 December 2024","date":"2024-12-30"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q376243#P570"}},{"key":"deathplace","label":"Place of death","values":[{"text":"Melbourne","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q3141"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q376243#P20"}},{"key":"citizenship","label":"Citizenship","values":[{"text":"United States","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q30"},{"text":"United Kingdom","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q145"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q376243#P27"}},{"key":"occupation","label":"Occupation","values":[{"text":"chemist","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q593644"},{"text":"university teacher","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q1622272"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q376243#P106"}},{"key":"education","label":"Education","values":[{"text":"University of Edinburgh","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q160302","end":"1966"},{"text":"Stewart's Melville College","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q11839029"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q376243#P69"}},{"key":"awards","label":"Awards","values":[{"text":"Albert Einstein World Award of Science","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q1287930","date":"2007"},{"text":"King Faisal Prize in Science","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q30120085","date":"2007"},{"text":"Nobel Prize in Chemistry","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q44585","date":"2016"},{"text":"Davy Medal","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q220842","date":"2008"},{"text":"Fellow of the Royal Society","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q15631401","date":"1994"},{"text":"Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5442487","date":"2011"},{"text":"Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5438598"},{"text":"Knight Bachelor","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q833163"},{"text":"Arthur C.
