An early supporter of Adolf Hitler in Coburg, Schwede used intimidation and propaganda to help elect the first Nazi-majority local government in Germany. This contributed to a personality cult surrounding Schwede and he became known as \"Franz Schwede-Coburg.\" During World War II he ordered secret executions of the infirm and mass deportations of Jews. He also played a key role in abandoning the Pomeranian civilian population to the advancing Red Army, while escaping their fate himself. In 1945 he was captured by the British Army and in 1948 he was tried and convicted of war crimes.","summary_more":[],"facts":[{"key":"born","label":"Born","values":[{"text":"5 March 1888","date":"1888-03-05"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q77811#P569"}},{"key":"birthplace","label":"Place of birth","values":[{"text":"Klaipėda District Municipality","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q141132"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q77811#P19"}},{"key":"died","label":"Died","values":[{"text":"19 October 1960","date":"1960-10-19"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q77811#P570"}},{"key":"deathplace","label":"Place of death","values":[{"text":"Coburg","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14821"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q77811#P20"}},{"key":"citizenship","label":"Citizenship","values":[{"text":"Germany","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q183"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q77811#P27"}},{"key":"occupation","label":"Occupation","values":[{"text":"politician","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q82955"},{"text":"local politician","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q10547393"},{"text":"Gauleiter","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q1451250"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q77811#P106"}},{"key":"party","label":"Political party","values":[{"text":"Nazi Party (since 30 March 1925)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7320","start":"1925-03-30"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q77811#P102"}},{"key":"positions","label":"Positions held","values":[{"text":"member of the Reichstag of Nazi Germany","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q17856046"},{"text":"mayor","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q30185"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q77811#P39"}},{"key":"awards","label":"Awards","values":[{"text":"honorary citizen of Coburg","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q60839669","start":"1939","end":"1946-02-20"},{"text":"Blood Order","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q667167"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q77811#P166"}}],"office":null,"sections":[],"cited":[],"cited_from":null,"videos":[],"last_reviewed":null,"organizations":[],"same_as":["https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Franz_Schwede","https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q77811"],"faq":[{"q":"When was Franz Schwede born?","a":"Franz Schwede was born on 5 March 1888 in Klaipėda District Municipality."},{"q":"What positions has Franz Schwede held?","a":"Positions held by Franz Schwede include: member of the Reichstag of Nazi Germany; mayor."}],"related":[{"name":"Franz von Papen","url":"https://diginpl.com/people/franz-von-papen"},{"name":"Arthur Seyss-Inquart","url":"https://diginpl.com/people/arthur-seyss-inquart"},{"name":"Robert Heinrich Wagner","url":"https://diginpl.com/people/robert-heinrich-wagner"},{"name":"Fritz Wächtler","url":"https://diginpl.com/people/fritz-wachtler"},{"name":"Theodor Habicht","url":"https://diginpl.com/people/theodor-habicht"},{"name":"Willy Marschler","url":"https://diginpl.com/people/willy-marschler"},{"name":"Andrew Johnson","url":"https://diginpl.com/people/andrew-johnson"},{"name":"Ehud Olmert","url":"https://diginpl.com/people/ehud-olmert"},{"name":"Hussein Khalidi","url":"https://diginpl.com/people/hussein-khalidi"},{"name":"Ekrem İmamoğlu","url":"https://diginpl.com/people/ekrem-imamoglu"},{"name":"Nir Barkat","url":"https://diginpl.com/people/nir-barkat"},{"name":"Bill Haslam","url":"https://diginpl.com/people/bill-haslam"}],"places_in":[],"nearby":[],"image":null,"sources":[{"label":"Wikipedia (English): Franz Schwede","url":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Franz_Schwede","license":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/"},{"label":"Wikidata item Q77811","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q77811","license":"https://creativecommons.org/publicdomain/zero/1.0/"}],"license":{"text":"CC BY-SA 4.0","url":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/","facts":"https://creativecommons.org/publicdomain/zero/1.0/"},"attribution":"Text from the Wikipedia article Franz Schwede, licensed under CC BY-SA 4.0.
