A major in the Guatemalan army under the dictator Jorge Ubico, he allied with a progressive faction of the army to topple Ubico's successor Federico Ponce Vaides. He led the three-man junta that oversaw the transition to a democratic government, although he was personally reluctant to allow the elected President Juan José Arévalo to take office in 1945. He served as the Chief of the Armed Forces in the new government until 1949. On 18 July 1949 he was killed in a shootout with supporters of the Arévalo government after he threatened to launch a coup.","summary_more":[],"facts":[{"key":"born","label":"Born","values":[{"text":"5 December 1905","date":"1905-12-05"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q3177456#P569"}},{"key":"birthplace","label":"Place of birth","values":[{"text":"Villa Canales","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q174266"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q3177456#P19"}},{"key":"died","label":"Died","values":[{"text":"18 July 1949","date":"1949-07-18"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q3177456#P570"}},{"key":"deathplace","label":"Place of death","values":[{"text":"Amatitlán","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q455760"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q3177456#P20"}},{"key":"citizenship","label":"Citizenship","values":[{"text":"Guatemala","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q774"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q3177456#P27"}},{"key":"occupation","label":"Occupation","values":[{"text":"politician","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q82955"},{"text":"military personnel","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q47064"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q3177456#P106"}},{"key":"party","label":"Political party","values":[{"text":"Party of Anticommunist Unification","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7141060"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q3177456#P102"}},{"key":"positions","label":"Positions held","values":[{"text":"Chief of Staff (15 March 1945 – 18 June 1949)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q707492","start":"1945-03-15","end":"1949-06-18"},{"text":"president of Guatemala (20 October 1944 – 15 March 1945)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6085537","start":"1944-10-20","end":"1945-03-15"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q3177456#P39"}}],"office":null,"sections":[],"cited":[],"cited_from":null,"videos":[],"last_reviewed":null,"organizations":[],"same_as":["https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Francisco_Javier_Arana","https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q3177456"],"faq":[{"q":"When was Francisco Javier Arana born?","a":"Francisco Javier Arana was born on 5 December 1905 in Villa Canales."},{"q":"What positions has Francisco Javier Arana held?","a":"Positions held by Francisco Javier Arana include: Chief of Staff (1945–1949); president of Guatemala (1944–1945)."}],"related":[{"name":"Juan Antonio Martínez","url":"https://diginpl.com/people/juan-antonio-martinez"},{"name":"Alfonso Portillo","url":"https://diginpl.com/people/alfonso-portillo"},{"name":"Otto Pérez Molina","url":"https://diginpl.com/people/otto-perez-molina"},{"name":"Jacobo Árbenz","url":"https://diginpl.com/people/jacobo-arbenz"},{"name":"Álvaro Arzú","url":"https://diginpl.com/people/alvaro-arzu"},{"name":"Álvaro Colom","url":"https://diginpl.com/people/alvaro-colom"}],"places_in":[],"nearby":[],"image":{"url":"https://diginpl.com/kb-img/francisco-javier-arana-576b49f135.jpg","width":202,"height":294,"license":"Public domain","credit":"Unknown author Unknown author","page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Francisco_Javier_Arana_(cropped).jpg"},"sources":[{"label":"Wikipedia (English): Francisco Javier Arana","url":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Francisco_Javier_Arana","license":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/"},{"label":"Wikidata item Q3177456","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q3177456","license":"https://creativecommons.org/publicdomain/zero/1.0/"},{"label":"Image: Francisco Javier Arana (cropped).jpg by Unknown author Unknown author (Public domain)","url":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Francisco_Javier_Arana_(cropped).jpg","license":null}],"license":{"text":"CC BY-SA 4.0","url":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/","facts":"https://creativecommons.org/publicdomain/zero/1.0/"},"attribution":"Text from the Wikipedia article Francisco Javier Arana, licensed under CC BY-SA 4.0.
