He co-founded the Society of Jesus and, as a representative of the Portuguese Empire, led the first Christian mission to Japan.","summary_more":["Born in the town of Xavier, Kingdom of Navarre, he was a companion of Ignatius of Loyola and one of the first seven Jesuits who took vows of poverty and chastity at Montmartre, Paris in 1534. Xavier also extended his mission to Ming China, where he died on Shangchuan Island.","He was beatified by Pope Paul V on 25 October 1619 and canonized by Pope Gregory XV on 12 March 1622. In 1624, he was made co-patron of Navarre. Known as the \"Apostle of the Indies\", \"Apostle of the Far East\", \"Apostle of China\" and \"Apostle of Japan\", he is considered to be one of the greatest missionaries since Paul the Apostle. In 1927, Pope Pius XI published the decree Apostolicorum in Missionibus naming Francis…"],"facts":[{"key":"born","label":"Born","values":[{"text":"7 April 1506","date":"1506-04-07"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q163900#P569"}},{"key":"birthplace","label":"Place of birth","values":[{"text":"Javier","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q1773006"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q163900#P19"}},{"key":"died","label":"Died","values":[{"text":"3 December 1552","date":"1552-12-03"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q163900#P570"}},{"key":"deathplace","label":"Place of death","values":[{"text":"Shangchuan Island","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q1397551"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q163900#P20"}},{"key":"citizenship","label":"Citizenship","values":[{"text":"Kingdom of Navarre","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q200262","end":"1512"},{"text":"Crown of Castile","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q217196","start":"1512"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q163900#P27"}},{"key":"occupation","label":"Occupation","values":[{"text":"missionary","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q219477"},{"text":"writer","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q36180"},{"text":"explorer","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q11900058"},{"text":"Latin Catholic priest","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q1469535","start":"1537"},{"text":"Catholic theologian","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q98833890"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q163900#P106"}},{"key":"education","label":"Education","values":[{"text":"University of Paris","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q2845896"},{"text":"Collège Sainte-Barbe","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q1110002","start":"1525","end":"1530"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q163900#P69"}},{"key":"positions","label":"Positions held","values":[{"text":"apostle","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q43412"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q163900#P39"}}],"office":null,"sections":[],"cited":[],"cited_from":null,"videos":[],"last_reviewed":null,"organizations":[],"same_as":["https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Francis_Xavier","https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q163900"],"faq":[{"q":"When was Francis Xavier born?","a":"Francis Xavier was born on 7 April 1506 in Javier."},{"q":"What positions has Francis Xavier held?","a":"Positions held by Francis Xavier include: apostle."},{"q":"Where did Francis Xavier study?","a":"Francis Xavier was educated at University of Paris, Collège Sainte-Barbe."}],"related":[{"name":"Saint Peter","url":"https://diginpl.com/people/saint-peter"},{"name":"Abel Tasman","url":"https://diginpl.com/people/abel-tasman"},{"name":"Alexander von Humboldt","url":"https://diginpl.com/people/alexander-von-humboldt"},{"name":"Alexei Leonov","url":"https://diginpl.com/people/alexei-leonov"},{"name":"Alfred Russel Wallace","url":"https://diginpl.com/people/alfred-russel-wallace"},{"name":"Alfred Wegener","url":"https://diginpl.com/people/alfred-wegener"},{"name":"Amerigo Vespucci","url":"https://diginpl.com/people/amerigo-vespucci"},{"name":"Arthur C.
