He successfully overthrew the Kamakura shogunate in 1333 and established the short-lived Kenmu Restoration to bring the Imperial House back into power. This was to be the last time the emperor had real power until the Meiji Restoration in 1868. The Kenmu restoration was in turn overthrown by Ashikaga Takauji in 1336, ushering in the Ashikaga shogunate. The overthrow split the imperial family into two opposing factions between the Ashikaga backed Northern Court situated in Kyoto and the Southern Court based in Yoshino. The Southern Court was led by Go-Daigo and his later successors.","summary_more":[],"facts":[{"key":"born","label":"Born","values":[{"text":"26 November 1288","date":"1288-11-26"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q313942#P569"}},{"key":"birthplace","label":"Place of birth","values":[{"text":"Kyoto","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q34600"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q313942#P19"}},{"key":"died","label":"Died","values":[{"text":"19 September 1339","date":"1339-09-19"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q313942#P570"}},{"key":"deathplace","label":"Place of death","values":[{"text":"Yoshino Angū","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q11414514"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q313942#P20"}},{"key":"citizenship","label":"Citizenship","values":[{"text":"Japan","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q17"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q313942#P27"}},{"key":"occupation","label":"Occupation","values":[{"text":"ruler","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q1097498"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q313942#P106"}},{"key":"spouse","label":"Spouse","values":[{"text":"Saionji Kishi","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7223538"},{"text":"Shunshi-naishinnō","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7244659"},{"text":"Ano Renshi","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q11657998"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q313942#P26"}},{"key":"positions","label":"Positions held","values":[{"text":"Emperor of Japan (29 March 1318 – 18 September 1339)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q208233","start":"1318-03-29","end":"1339-09-18"},{"text":"Dazai-no-sochi (12 April 1304 – 15 June 1307)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q11434484","start":"1304-04-12","end":"1307-06-15"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q313942#P39"}}],"office":null,"sections":[],"cited":[],"cited_from":null,"videos":[],"last_reviewed":null,"organizations":[],"same_as":["https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emperor_Go-Daigo","https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q313942"],"faq":[{"q":"When was Emperor Go-Daigo born?","a":"Emperor Go-Daigo was born on 26 November 1288 in Kyoto."},{"q":"What positions has Emperor Go-Daigo held?","a":"Positions held by Emperor Go-Daigo include: Emperor of Japan (1318–1339); Dazai-no-sochi (1304–1307)."}],"related":[{"name":"Hirohito","url":"https://diginpl.com/people/hirohito"},{"name":"Akihito","url":"https://diginpl.com/people/akihito"},{"name":"Emperor Go-Sanjō","url":"https://diginpl.com/people/emperor-go-sanjo"},{"name":"Empress Meishō","url":"https://diginpl.com/people/empress-meisho"},{"name":"Emperor Go-Komatsu","url":"https://diginpl.com/people/emperor-go-komatsu"},{"name":"Emperor Taishō","url":"https://diginpl.com/people/emperor-taisho"}],"places_in":[],"nearby":[],"image":{"url":"https://diginpl.com/kb-img/emperor-go-daigo-b6c81fe195.jpg","width":500,"height":500,"license":"Public domain","credit":"Monkan-bō Kōshin","page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Emperor_Godaigo_by_Monkan-b%C5%8D_K%C5%8Dshin.jpg"},"sources":[{"label":"Wikipedia (English): Emperor Go-Daigo","url":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emperor_Go-Daigo","license":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/"},{"label":"Wikidata item Q313942","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q313942","license":"https://creativecommons.org/publicdomain/zero/1.0/"},{"label":"Image: Emperor Godaigo by Monkan-bō Kōshin.jpg by Monkan-bō Kōshin (Public domain)","url":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Emperor_Godaigo_by_Monkan-b%C5%8D_K%C5%8Dshin.jpg","license":null}],"license":{"text":"CC BY-SA 4.0","url":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/","facts":"https://creativecommons.org/publicdomain/zero/1.0/"},"attribution":"Text from the Wikipedia article Emperor Go-Daigo, licensed under CC BY-SA 4.0.
