As the second vice president from 1946 to 1948, he assumed the presidency upon the death of Manuel Roxas in 1948.","summary_more":["A lawyer by profession, Quirino entered politics when he became a representative of Ilocos Sur's first district from 1919 to 1922. He was then elected as a senator from 1925 to 1935. In 1934, he became a member of the Philippine Independence Commission that was sent to Washington, D.C., which secured the passage of Tydings–McDuffie Act to the United States Congress. In 1935, he was also elected to the 1935 Constitutional Convention that drafted the 1935 Philippine Constitution for the newly established Philippine Commonwealth. In the new government, he served as secretary of the interior and finance under the cabinet of President Manuel L. Quezon.","After World War II, Quirino was elected vice-president in the April 1946 presidential election, consequently the second and last for the Commonwealth and first for the Third Republic. He won a full term under the Liberal Party ticket, defeating Nacionalista former president José P. Laurel as well as fellow Liberalista and former Senate President José Dira Avelino. The Quirino administration was generally challenged by the Hukbalahap, who ransacked towns and barrios. Quirino ran for president again in November 1953 but was defeated by Ramon Magsaysay in a landslide."],"facts":[{"key":"born","label":"Born","values":[{"text":"16 November 1890","date":"1890-11-16"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q319943#P569"}},{"key":"died","label":"Died","values":[{"text":"29 February 1956","date":"1956-02-29"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q319943#P570"}},{"key":"deathplace","label":"Place of death","values":[{"text":"Quezon City","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q1475"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q319943#P20"}},{"key":"citizenship","label":"Citizenship","values":[{"text":"Philippines","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q928"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q319943#P27"}},{"key":"occupation","label":"Occupation","values":[{"text":"diplomat","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q193391"},{"text":"lawyer","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q40348"},{"text":"politician","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q82955"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q319943#P106"}},{"key":"party","label":"Political party","values":[{"text":"Liberal Party of the Philippines","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q1476937"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q319943#P102"}},{"key":"education","label":"Education","values":[{"text":"University of the Philippines College of Law","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7896725"},{"text":"Manila High School","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q25211962"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q319943#P69"}},{"key":"spouse","label":"Spouse","values":[{"text":"Alicia Syquia-Quirino","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q29598701"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q319943#P26"}},{"key":"positions","label":"Positions held","values":[{"text":"President of the Philippines (17 April 1948 – 30 December 1953)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q1209571","start":"1948-04-17","end":"1953-12-30"},{"text":"Secretary of Foreign Affairs (16 September 1946 – 17 April 1948)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q17088037","start":"1946-09-16","end":"1948-04-17"},{"text":"Vice President of the Philippines (28 May 1946 – 17 April 1948)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q2723485","start":"1946-05-28","end":"1948-04-17"},{"text":"Secretary of Finance (28 May 1946 – 24 November 1946)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7444305","start":"1946-05-28","end":"1946-11-24"},{"text":"Member of the Senate of the Philippines (9 July 1945 – 28 May 1946)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q18579098","start":"1945-07-09","end":"1946-05-28"},{"text":"President pro tempore of the Senate of the Philippines (9 July 1945 – 28 May 1946)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7241402","start":"1945-07-09","end":"1946-05-28"},{"text":"Secretary of the Interior and Local Government (1935–1938)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7444421","start":"1935","end":"1938"},{"text":"Member of the Senate of the Philippines (1925–1935)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q18579098","start":"1925","end":"1935-11-15"},{"text":"member of the House of Representatives (until 1925)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q18002923","end":"1925"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q319943#P39"}},{"key":"awards","label":"Awards","values":[{"text":"Collar of the Order of Isabella the Catholic‎","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q17366068","date":"1953"},{"text":"Grand Cross of the Order of Isabella the Catholic","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q17365974","date":"1946"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q319943#P166"}}],"office":null,"sections":[],"cited":[],"cited_from":null,"videos":[],"last_reviewed":null,"organizations":[],"same_as":["https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elpidio_Quirino","https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q319943"],"faq":[{"q":"When was Elpidio Quirino born?","a":"Elpidio Quirino was born on 16 November 1890."},{"q":"What positions has Elpidio Quirino held?","a":"Positions held by Elpidio Quirino include: President of the Philippines (1948–1953); Secretary of Foreign Affairs (1946–1948); Vice President of the Philippines (1946–1948); Secretary of Finance (1946–1946); Member of the Senate of the Philippines (1945–1946)."},{"q":"Where did Elpidio Quirino study?","a":"Elpidio Quirino was educated at University of the Philippines College of Law, Manila High School."}],"related":[{"name":"Gloria Macapagal Arroyo","url":"https://diginpl.com/people/gloria-macapagal-arroyo"},{"name":"Benigno Aquino III","url":"https://diginpl.com/people/benigno-aquino-iii"},{"name":"Ferdinand Marcos","url":"https://diginpl.com/people/ferdinand-marcos"},{"name":"Carlos P.
