Born in Halifax in 1901, Huggins moved to the United States for medical school. He was one of the founding staff members of the University of Chicago Medical School, where he remained for the duration of his professional research career. Huggins's work on how sex hormones influence prostate function ultimately led to his discovery of hormone therapies to treat prostate cancer. For this finding, he was awarded the 1966 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine. In addition to his work on prostate cancer, Huggins explored the relationship between hormones and breast cancer, developed an animal model for breast cancer, and developed chromogenic substrates that are widely used for biochemical analyses. Huggins continued to perform research into his 90s; he died in Chicago in 1997.","summary_more":[],"facts":[{"key":"born","label":"Born","values":[{"text":"22 September 1901","date":"1901-09-22"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q155371#P569"}},{"key":"birthplace","label":"Place of birth","values":[{"text":"Halifax","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q2141"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q155371#P19"}},{"key":"died","label":"Died","values":[{"text":"12 January 1997","date":"1997-01-12"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q155371#P570"}},{"key":"deathplace","label":"Place of death","values":[{"text":"Chicago","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q1297"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q155371#P20"}},{"key":"citizenship","label":"Citizenship","values":[{"text":"Canada","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q16"},{"text":"United States","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q30"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q155371#P27"}},{"key":"occupation","label":"Occupation","values":[{"text":"physiologist","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q2055046"},{"text":"oncologist","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q16062369"},{"text":"university teacher","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q1622272"},{"text":"surgeon","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q774306"},{"text":"physician","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q39631"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q155371#P106"}},{"key":"education","label":"Education","values":[{"text":"Harvard Medical School","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q49121"},{"text":"Acadia University","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q337382"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q155371#P69"}},{"key":"spouse","label":"Spouse","values":[{"text":"Melba Moore","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q448876"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q155371#P26"}},{"key":"awards","label":"Awards","values":[{"text":"Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q80061","date":"1966"},{"text":"Pour le Mérite for Sciences and Arts order","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q15056034"},{"text":"Canada Gairdner International Award","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q1031994","date":"1966"},{"text":"Lasker-DeBakey Clinical Medical Research Award","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q136696","date":"1963"},{"text":"Canadian Medical Hall of Fame","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q3517661","date":"2003"},{"text":"Honorary doctor of the University of Bologna","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q40743212"},{"text":"honorary doctor of the University of Aberdeen","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q50840990"},{"text":"Grand Officer of the Order of the Sun of Peru‎","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q25929447"},{"text":"Honorary Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q105339055","date":"1959"},{"text":"Cameron Prize of the University of Edinburgh","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q29026864"},{"text":"Amory Prize","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q18410199","date":"1947"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q155371#P166"}}],"office":null,"sections":[],"cited":[],"cited_from":null,"videos":[],"last_reviewed":null,"organizations":[],"same_as":["https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Brenton_Huggins","https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q155371"],"faq":[{"q":"When was Charles Brenton Huggins born?","a":"Charles Brenton Huggins was born on 22 September 1901 in Halifax."},{"q":"Where did Charles Brenton Huggins study?","a":"Charles Brenton Huggins was educated at Harvard Medical School, Acadia University."}],"related":[{"name":"Arthur B.
