He adopted the title of Sultan-i Rûm, Rûm being the Arabic name for the Eastern Roman Empire. In 1394, Bayezid unsuccessfully besieged Constantinople. Two years later, he defeated the crusaders at the Battle of Nicopolis in what is now Bulgaria in 1396. Bayezid vanquished all the Anatolian beyliks and proceeded to conquer and vassalize the entirety of Anatolia. In 1402, he once more besieged Constantinople, appearing to find success, but he ultimately withdrew due to the invasion of the Turco-Mongol conqueror Timur. Bayezid was defeated and captured by Timur at the Battle of Ankara in 1402 and died in captivity in March 1403, which triggered the Ottoman Interregnum between his sons.","summary_more":[],"facts":[{"key":"born","label":"Born","values":[{"text":"8 March 1354","date":"1354-03-08"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q128358#P569"}},{"key":"birthplace","label":"Place of birth","values":[{"text":"Edirne","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q43387"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q128358#P19"}},{"key":"died","label":"Died","values":[{"text":"8 March 1403","date":"1403-03-08"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q128358#P570"}},{"key":"deathplace","label":"Place of death","values":[{"text":"Akşehir","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q169974"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q128358#P20"}},{"key":"occupation","label":"Occupation","values":[{"text":"ruler","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q1097498"},{"text":"poet","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q49757"},{"text":"sultan","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q43292"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q128358#P106"}},{"key":"spouse","label":"Spouse","values":[{"text":"Olivera Lazarević","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q458610"},{"text":"Devletşah Hatun","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5267608"},{"text":"Maria Fadrique d'Aragona, Countess of Salona","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q11935440"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q128358#P26"}},{"key":"positions","label":"Positions held","values":[{"text":"sultan of the Ottoman Empire (1389–1402)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q15315411","start":"1389","end":"1402"},{"text":"Beylerbey of the Anatolia Eyalet","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q50843327"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q128358#P39"}}],"office":null,"sections":[],"cited":[],"cited_from":null,"videos":[],"last_reviewed":null,"organizations":[],"same_as":["https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bayezid_I","https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q128358"],"faq":[{"q":"When was Bayezid I born?","a":"Bayezid I was born on 8 March 1354 in Edirne."},{"q":"What positions has Bayezid I held?","a":"Positions held by Bayezid I include: sultan of the Ottoman Empire (1389–1402); Beylerbey of the Anatolia Eyalet."}],"related":[{"name":"Suleiman the Magnificent","url":"https://diginpl.com/people/suleiman-the-magnificent"},{"name":"Mehmed II","url":"https://diginpl.com/people/mehmed-ii"},{"name":"Murad II","url":"https://diginpl.com/people/murad-ii"},{"name":"Ahmed I","url":"https://diginpl.com/people/ahmed-i"},{"name":"Murad I","url":"https://diginpl.com/people/murad-i"},{"name":"Osman I","url":"https://diginpl.com/people/osman-i"},{"name":"Hadım Sinan Pasha","url":"https://diginpl.com/people/hadm-sinan-pasha"},{"name":"Selim II","url":"https://diginpl.com/people/selim-ii"}],"places_in":[],"nearby":[],"image":{"url":"https://diginpl.com/kb-img/bayezid-i-67217dd183.jpg","width":500,"height":668,"license":"Public domain","credit":"1460 artist","page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:The_accession_of_Sultan_Bayezid_I_(enthroned)._Ahmed%C3%AE,_Iskendername,_VBNM,_circa_1460.,_Cod._Or._XC_(57),_y._240b.jpg"},"sources":[{"label":"Wikipedia (English): Bayezid I","url":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bayezid_I","license":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/"},{"label":"Wikidata item Q128358","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q128358","license":"https://creativecommons.org/publicdomain/zero/1.0/"},{"label":"Image: The accession of Sultan Bayezid I (enthroned).
