Leggett was widely recognised as a world leader in the theory of low-temperature physics, and his pioneering work on superfluidity was recognised by the 2003 Nobel Prize in Physics. He shaped the theoretical understanding of normal and superfluid helium liquids and strongly coupled superfluids. He set directions for research in the quantum physics of macroscopic dissipative systems and use of condensed systems to test the foundations of quantum mechanics.","summary_more":[],"facts":[{"key":"born","label":"Born","values":[{"text":"26 March 1938","date":"1938-03-26"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q192718#P569"}},{"key":"birthplace","label":"Place of birth","values":[{"text":"Camberwell","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q385060"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q192718#P19"}},{"key":"died","label":"Died","values":[{"text":"8 March 2026","date":"2026-03-08"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q192718#P570"}},{"key":"deathplace","label":"Place of death","values":[{"text":"Urbana","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q462184"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q192718#P20"}},{"key":"citizenship","label":"Citizenship","values":[{"text":"United States","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q30"},{"text":"United Kingdom","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q145"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q192718#P27"}},{"key":"occupation","label":"Occupation","values":[{"text":"physicist","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q169470"},{"text":"university teacher","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q1622272"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q192718#P106"}},{"key":"education","label":"Education","values":[{"text":"Merton College","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q82513"},{"text":"Wimbledon College","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q8023516"},{"text":"University of Oxford","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q34433"},{"text":"Balliol College","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q805285"},{"text":"Magdalen College","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q81162"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q192718#P69"}},{"key":"awards","label":"Awards","values":[{"text":"Fellow of the Royal Society","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q15631401","date":"1980"},{"text":"Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q12201445","date":"2004"},{"text":"Fellow of the American Physical Society","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q41955909"},{"text":"Maxwell Medal and Prize","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q1745209","date":"1975"},{"text":"Fritz London Award","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q246592","date":"1981"},{"text":"IOP Dirac Medal","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q1227368","date":"1992"},{"text":"Feenberg Medal","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q1400970","date":"1999"},{"text":"Wolf Prize in Physics","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q845333","date":"2002"},{"text":"Nobel Prize in Physics","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q38104","date":"2003"},{"text":"honorary doctor of the University of Madrid Complutense","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q50621171","date":"2011"},{"text":"honorary doctor of Toulouse-III University","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q126416242","date":"2015"},{"text":"Simon Memorial Prize","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q24955922"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q192718#P166"}}],"office":null,"sections":[],"cited":[],"cited_from":null,"videos":[],"last_reviewed":null,"organizations":[],"same_as":["https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anthony_Leggett","https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q192718"],"faq":[{"q":"When was Anthony Leggett born?","a":"Anthony Leggett was born on 26 March 1938 in Camberwell."},{"q":"Where did Anthony Leggett study?","a":"Anthony Leggett was educated at Merton College, Wimbledon College, University of Oxford, Balliol College."}],"related":[{"name":"Jan Koum","url":"https://diginpl.com/people/jan-koum"},{"name":"Joe Gebbia","url":"https://diginpl.com/people/joe-gebbia"},{"name":"Luke Nosek","url":"https://diginpl.com/people/luke-nosek"},{"name":"Miriam Adelson","url":"https://diginpl.com/people/miriam-adelson"},{"name":"Adam Riess","url":"https://diginpl.com/people/adam-riess"},{"name":"Alan J.
