He was acquitted in the Senate by one vote.","summary_more":["Johnson was born into poverty and never attended school. He was the governor of Tennessee for four years, and was elected by the legislature to the U.S. Senate in 1857. During his congressional service, he sought passage of the Homestead Bill, which was enacted soon after he left his Senate seat. In February 1861, slave states in the Southern U.S., including Tennessee, seceded to form the Confederate States of America, but Johnson remained firmly with the Union. He was the only senator from a Confederate state who did not promptly resign his seat upon learning of his state's secession. In 1862, Lincoln appointed him as Military Governor of Tennessee after most of it had been retaken. Johnson was a logical choice as Lincoln's running mate in 1864 because…"],"facts":[{"key":"born","label":"Born","values":[{"text":"29 December 1808","date":"1808-12-29"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q8612#P569"}},{"key":"birthplace","label":"Place of birth","values":[{"text":"Raleigh","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q41087"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q8612#P19"}},{"key":"died","label":"Died","values":[{"text":"31 July 1875","date":"1875-07-31"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q8612#P570"}},{"key":"deathplace","label":"Place of death","values":[{"text":"Elizabethton","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q1389138"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q8612#P20"}},{"key":"citizenship","label":"Citizenship","values":[{"text":"United States","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q30"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q8612#P27"}},{"key":"occupation","label":"Occupation","values":[{"text":"politician","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q82955"},{"text":"military officer","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q189290"},{"text":"statesperson","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q372436"},{"text":"tailor","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q242468"},{"text":"governor","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q132050"},{"text":"mayor","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q30185"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q8612#P106"}},{"key":"party","label":"Political party","values":[{"text":"National Union Party (1864–1868)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q80719","start":"1864","end":"1868"},{"text":"Democratic Party (since 1839)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q29552","start":"1839"},{"text":"Workingmen's Party of New York (1829–1835)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q8035002","start":"1829","end":"1835"},{"text":"Republican Party","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q29468"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q8612#P102"}},{"key":"spouse","label":"Spouse","values":[{"text":"Eliza McCardle Johnson","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q234295","start":"1827-05-17","end":"1875-07-31"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q8612#P26"}},{"key":"positions","label":"Positions held","values":[{"text":"United States senator (4 March 1875 – 31 July 1875)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q4416090","start":"1875-03-04","end":"1875-07-31"},{"text":"President of the United States (15 April 1865 – 4 March 1869)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q11696","start":"1865-04-15","end":"1869-03-04"},{"text":"Vice President of the United States (4 March 1865 – 15 April 1865)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q11699","start":"1865-03-04","end":"1865-04-15"},{"text":"Governor of Tennessee (12 March 1862 – 4 March 1865)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5589724","start":"1862-03-12","end":"1865-03-04"},{"text":"United States senator (4 March 1861 – 4 March 1862)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q4416090","start":"1861-03-04","end":"1862-03-04"},{"text":"United States senator (4 March 1859 – 4 March 1861)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q4416090","start":"1859-03-04","end":"1861-03-04"},{"text":"United States senator (8 October 1857 – 4 March 1859)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q4416090","start":"1857-10-08","end":"1859-03-04"},{"text":"United States representative (4 March 1843 – 3 March 1853)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q13218630","start":"1843-03-04","end":"1853-03-03"},{"text":"member of the State Senate of Tennessee","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q18534307"},{"text":"member of the Tennessee House of Representatives","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q18538054"},{"text":"senator","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q15686806"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q8612#P39"}}],"office":null,"sections":[],"cited":[],"cited_from":null,"videos":[],"last_reviewed":null,"organizations":[],"same_as":["https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andrew_Johnson","https://ne.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E0%A4%8F%E0%A4%A8%E0%A5%8D%E0%A4%A1%E0%A5%8D%E0%A4%B0%E0%A4%AF%E0%A5%81_%E0%A4%9C%E0%A5%8B%E0%A4%A8%E0%A5%8D%E0%A4%B8%E0%A4%A8","https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q8612"],"faq":[{"q":"When was Andrew Johnson born?","a":"Andrew Johnson was born on 29 December 1808 in Raleigh."},{"q":"What positions has Andrew Johnson held?","a":"Positions held by Andrew Johnson include: United States senator (1875–1875);
