He was the second son of King Sancho Ramírez and successor of his brother Peter I. With his marriage to Urraca, queen regnant of Castile, León and Galicia, in 1109, he began to use, with some justification, the grandiose title Emperor of Spain, formerly employed by his father-in-law, Alfonso VI. Alfonso the Battler earned his sobriquet in the Reconquista. He won his greatest military successes in the middle Ebro, where he conquered Zaragoza in 1118 and later took Ejea, Tudela, Calatayud, Borja, Tarazona, Daroca, and Monreal del Campo. He died in September 1134 after an unsuccessful battle with the Muslims at the Battle of Fraga.","summary_more":["Alfonso's nickname comes from the Aragonese version of the Chronicle of San Juan de la Peña (c. 1370), which says that \"they called him lord Alfonso the battler because in Spain there wasn't as good a knight who won twenty-nine battles\" (clamabanlo don Alfonso batallador porque en Espayna no ovo tan buen cavallero que veynte nueve batallas vençió)."],"facts":[{"key":"born","label":"Born","values":[{"text":"1073","date":"1073"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q81833#P569"}},{"key":"birthplace","label":"Place of birth","values":[{"text":"Kingdom of Aragon","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q199442"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q81833#P19"}},{"key":"died","label":"Died","values":[{"text":"7 September 1134","date":"1134-09-07"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q81833#P570"}},{"key":"deathplace","label":"Place of death","values":[{"text":"Poleñino","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q984585"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q81833#P20"}},{"key":"citizenship","label":"Citizenship","values":[{"text":"Kingdom of Aragon","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q199442"},{"text":"Kingdom of Pamplona","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q3446210"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q81833#P27"}},{"key":"occupation","label":"Occupation","values":[{"text":"ruler","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q1097498"},{"text":"Miles Christianus","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q1678054"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q81833#P106"}},{"key":"spouse","label":"Spouse","values":[{"text":"Urraca of León","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q128701","page":"https://diginpl.com/people/urraca-of-leon-and-castile","start":"1109","end":"1115"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q81833#P26"}},{"key":"positions","label":"Positions held","values":[{"text":"King of León (iure uxoris) (1109–1115)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q111516568","start":"1109","end":"1115"},{"text":"king of Galicia (jure uxoris) (1109–1115)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q58008017","start":"1109","end":"1115"},{"text":"King of Castile (Iure uxoris) (1109–1115)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q111571014","start":"1109","end":"1115"},{"text":"King of Pamplona (1104–1134)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q58007279","start":"1104","end":"1134"},{"text":"Monarch of the kingdom of Aragon (1104–1134)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q24349189","start":"1104","end":"1134"},{"text":"Count of Ribagorza (1104–1134)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q58002672","start":"1104","end":"1134"}],"source":{"label":"Wikidata","url":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q81833#P39"}}],"office":null,"sections":[],"cited":[],"cited_from":null,"videos":[],"last_reviewed":null,"organizations":[],"same_as":["https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alfonso_the_Battler","https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q81833"],"faq":[{"q":"When was Alfonso the Battler born?","a":"Alfonso the Battler was born on 1073 in Kingdom of Aragon."},{"q":"What positions has Alfonso the Battler held?","a":"Positions held by Alfonso the Battler include: King of León (iure uxoris) (1109–1115);
