History and significance: Teej is a women's festival honouring the goddess Parvati, who according to legend fasted and meditated until Shiva accepted her as his wife. Married women fast for the long life of their husbands and unmarried women for a good partner, often without food or water for the whole day. In Nepal women dress in red saris, sing and dance in groups and gather at Pashupatinath and other Shiva temples. The festival is preceded by Dar Khane, a feast on the night before. Key rituals and foods: Dar Khane feast, nirjala fast, worship of Shiva and Parvati, singing and dancing, Rishi Panchami purification two days later; foods include dar meals of rich dishes, sweets and fruit.
